Increase in measles cases reported in Medina County

MEDINA — The Medina County Health Department was notified of four confirmed and 14 probable measles cases in Medina County as of Thursday. The health department said in a media release that the cases were identified within a small group of families taking precautions to isolate. When the health department identifies a measles case, it contacts each individual to determine whether any public exposures may have occurred. To date, Medina County has not identified any public exposure locations, including schools. If the health department identifies a public exposure location in the future, it will notify the public promptly. For vaccinated members of the general public, the risk of contracting measles remains low. Director of Community Health Mike Metcalf said the health department looks to the Ohio Department of Health School Immunization Data Dashboard for the most current MMR vaccination rate in the county. The dashboard shows how many enrolled kindergartners are vaccinated for 2025-26. The data show that 91.2 percent of kindergartners in Medina County have received the MMR vaccine. People with two documented doses of the MMR vaccine do not need another dose. Adults who only had one dose, those vaccinated between 1963 and 1967 and those who cannot find their vaccination records should talk with a health care provider about getting vaccinated. Newborns have some natural immunity for the first few months of life if their mothers were vaccinated against measles. Parents with infants between 6 and 12 months can speak with their health care provider about an early, extra dose of the MMR vaccine if they live in or will be traveling to an area with a measles outbreak. Anyone traveling internationally is also recommended to have two doses of the MMR vaccine. The most current measles case count for Medina County can be found at medinahealth.org/health-alerts. This page will be updated regularly. The health department will continue to follow up with any positive cases and will notify the public if it identifies any public exposure locations.
