State girls golf: Brunswick's Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble tied for eighth after one round

KETTERING — Brunswick girls golf standout Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble is All-Ohio contention after the opening round of the Division I state tournament Monday. The junior fired a 3-over-par 73 at NCR Country Club, one stroke behind first-team status and in a tie for eighth place. The first five players, plus ties, are first team, while the next five, plus ties, are second team. Gonzalez-Ribble is nine strokes behind leader Jodie Hahn of Olentangy, whose sizzling 64 featured seven birdies. Gonzalez-Ribble was largely steady, opening with a bogey before five straight pars. The reigning second-team All-Ohioan then bogeyed Nos. 7 and 9 to make the turn 3 over. She made a move with birdies on the 151-yard 11th and 459-yard, par-5 12th. The momentum was stagnated by bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15, but Gonzalez-Ribble parred out to remain in the top 10. Magnificat (301) leads Walsh Jesuit by eight strokes atop the team standings. In boys action, Wadsworth resident Ray Koeberle of Archbishop Hoban is 23rd after carding a 76. The junior posted the top score for the Knights (316), who are 10th out of 12 teams.
