Kidder Elementary School and Brunswick Middle School earn Purple Star award

BRUNSWICK — Kidder Elementary School and Brunswick Middle School were recognized by the state for their commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families. The Ohio Department of Education's Purple Star Award is a statewide recognition for schools dedicated to military families. Brunswick Schools stated this year's recognition builds on the district's commitment since Brunswick High School received the Purple Star Award in 2024. "The Purple Star designation is reserved for schools that consistently meet the unique academic, social-emotional and transitional needs of students whose parents or guardians serve in the armed forces," Brunswick Schools stated. To earn the Purple Star designation, schools must meet the following criteria set forth by the Ohio Department of Education: -Have a military family liaison that serves as the school's primary point of contact for military families. The liaison must be a staff member at the building and must complete professional development on considerations for military students. - Demonstrate student engagement for kids from military families and show support through activities and events. -Identify military families to promote visibility and connect them with resources. -Maintain a dedicated page on the school's website listing resources for military families and the liaison's contact information. -Provide two-way communication between the school and military families. "The Brunswick City School District celebrates this achievement as a reflection of its ongoing mission to provide meaningful, relevant experiences that help all students explore their passions and develop the skills needed for success in school and beyond," Brunswick Schools stated. The Purple Star designation is valid for three years. "Earning the Purple Star Award highlights the core values of our district," Superintendent Jason Niedermeyer said. "Kidder and Brunswick Middle schools have created welcoming and stable environments where military-connected students feel acknowledged, supported and valued. This recognition showcases the compassion and dedication our staff demonstrates to every child, every day."
