Boys golf: Highland's Hayden Hoyt medals at Brunswick Tee-Off Classic

HINCKLEY TWP. — Highland senior Hayden Hoyt finished in style Thursday to win the Brunswick Tee-Off Classic. Hoyt chipped in for birdie from in front of the 18th green to finish with a dazzling 3-under-par 68. His final stroke broke a four-way tie atop of the leaderboard with GlenOak's Eddie Karam III, Hudson's Ben Fauver and St. Ignatius' Patrick Myers. The former three parred their final holes to finish one shot behind Hoyt. "Dude, it's electric," Hoyt said. "I chipped in on the last hole to shoot 68. That's one of the best feelings ever." The Hornets (319) finished 13th out of 20 teams that had with enough players to count a team score after Nordonia had two players withdraw. Highland was eight strokes from a three-way tie for seventh in a crowded field. Braedon Iacobacci carded a 74 to lead Brunswick (317) to 10th after Vinny Coven's 85 won a fifth-player tiebreaker with Medina. Greyson Desarle and Isaac Morgan each shot 80 for the Blue Devils. Again without reigning Gazette MVP Trent Riedel, who was playing in an American Junior Golf Association event, the Bees got 76s from Declan West and Kale Shockley-Macek, as well as a 77 from Johnny Quien. Wadsworth (337) was 19th, led by Colten Patrick's 81. Patrick recovered from a quintuple bogey on the 392-yard 11th hole to par eight out of the next 10 holes before finishing with a bogey on the 10th, which was shortened to 456 yards to play as a par 4. "I'm feeling good," he said. "I saved it with a lot of pars. On the first hole, I shot a nine and had to persevere through that. I put my head down, kept going and got the train rolling." But the day belonged to Hoyt, who got the first of six birdies on the 481-yard, par-5 fifth. He followed with birdies on the 511-yard, par-5 seventh and 194-yard, par-3 eighth to reach 3 under. After a bogey on the 11th, Hoyt got to 4 under and took sole possession of the lead with back-to-back birdies on the 402-yard 13th and 450-yard 14th. "I started out strong," he said. "I was even through four, and then I made a birdie and another birdie and then another one to shoot a 33 on the front. I was just striking it good." Behind Hoyt, Cooper Lutz turned in an 83 and Michael Caza and Trip Konopka each shot 84. Iacobacci kicked off his day with a birdie on the 405-yard second and sandwiched birdies around a double bogey on the 430-yard sixth to stay 1 under. That was where he remained until a double on No. 11 before five pars and two bogeys over his final seven holes. "I'm feeling great, honestly," Iacobacci said. "I went out there, and I shot a great round. I shot the lights out, my chipping was amazing, my putting was amazing. "I'm happy with how my team's jelling together this year. We're playing some good golf, and I'm excited for the season to come." Morgan parred 11 holes, while Desarle had 10 to bolster the Blue Devils' score. West's round was highlighted by a birdie on the seventh, while he also parred his final three holes after making the turn back to the first hole. Shockley-Macek birdied the fifth to jumpstart his round and came back with another birdie on the seventh to go to 2 under through three holes. He had eight pars in a nine-hole stretch before struggling to 4 over on his final four holes. "I'm feeling all right," he said. "I definitely should have shot a lot better. I was 1 over through 14 (holes), and then when I made the turn to one I made a bad wedge shot and kind of let it go from there. "On my first tee, I hit a really good drive to put myself into a good position, hit a good 5-wood and then two putted for birdie. That got the momentum going."
