Rear Admiral Janice Hamby talks about her journey from Medina to the Navy

MEDINA — Retired Rear Admiral Janice Hamby spoke Tuesday evening about her journey from Medina High School to becoming one of the first women assigned to serve on U.S. Navy combat ships. The event, hosted by Medina Mavens, featured Hamby discussing her military career, leadership experiences and the lessons she learned during decades of service. She spoke about the evolving role of technology in national security, breaking barriers, leading through change and serving with purpose. Hamby, a Medina native, reflected on how growing up in the community helped shape her character and influenced her career. "I fervently believe that growing up in a smaller town, where people knew each other, where people connected with each other, where people kept their eye on you, too, really helped shape and develop my character," Hamby said. Hamby also attended Medina's Fourth of July festivities over the holiday weekend and said the city continues to foster a strong sense of community. She encouraged people to become part of something larger than themselves, saying Medina helped instill that value in her at a young age. "You know, I remember Fourth of July celebrations when I was a kid, and we'd be encouraged to decorate our bikes with paper streamers and put the playing card in the spokes and ride along with the parade, and you always felt like you were part of a community," Hamby said. "I think that is something that is a challenge for a lot of kids today, feeling like they're a part of something bigger, something that has purpose." Hamby said her interest in the Navy began after she attended a Navy ROTC presentation while in high school and applied for a scholarship to help pay for college. Although she initially planned to complete only her required service commitment, she said her experience with the ROTC program changed her plans. "There was a camaraderie, there was an inclusiveness, there was a sense of family that just resonated with me," Hamby said. Throughout her military career, Hamby earned three master's degrees while serving and later completed a doctoral degree. She and her husband, retired U.S. Army soldier Dale Hamby, raised two children during their military careers and now enjoy spending time with their family. Hamby closed the evening by encouraging those in attendance to stand up for what is right, continue learning and make the most of every opportunity. "What is the point of existing if you're not growing and developing?" Hamby said. "You can either be alive or you can live."
