Brunswick's Sunday at the Farm Market kicks off for the season

BRUNSWICK — What began as a traditional farmers' market has evolved into a weekly community event that helps preserve local history while showcasing local vendors, artisans and musicians. The market was rebranded in 2023 from the Brunswick Farmers Market to Sunday at the Farm to better reflect the products available, according to organizer Katie Georgakopoulos. "We don't just have farm goods here, we have homemade things like jellies and jams, bakery items, handcrafted items and a variety of different things," Georgakopoulos said. The market now features 29 registered vendors, most of whom participate regularly throughout the season. Beyond shopping, the market also hosts live music every Sunday and many themed events throughout the year. Live music is performed every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with special events later this summer like Christmas in July. The market also serves as an important fundraiser for the Brunswick Area Historical Society, helping cover the operating costs of the property. "The money that we collect here goes toward the operating costs of the farm, like keeping the lights on and everything it takes to run the farm," she said. The farm itself is closely tied to the historical society's preservation efforts. The property includes a historic farmhouse that now serves as a museum, along with a restored one-room schoolhouse museum. Organizing the weekly market requires year-round planning and volunteer support, according to Georgakopoulos. As a member of the historical society's board of directors, she helps coordinate vendors, events and operations. "It is a full-time volunteer position," Georgakopoulos said. Many vendors have participated in the market for years, creating a close-knit community. To maintain variety, vendors must complete an application and receive approval before joining the market. This system helps ensure shoppers encounter a diverse selection of products, according to Georgakopoulos. Sunday at the Farm continues each Sunday at Heritage Farm, 4613 Laurel Road, through Oct. 4.
