Brunswick City Schools recognized for its Project Lead the Way program

BRUNSWICK — Brunswick Middle School and Brunswick High School were recently recognized as 2025-26 Project Lead the Way distinguished schools. The recognition is given by Project Lead the Way to a select group of schools across the country that work to increase student access, engagement and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math. "Our teachers go through a real robust training in order to teach these classes," Brunswick Schools Director of Instruction and Innovation Pat Geschke said. "(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is a high-interest area for a lot of kids, so this fulfills that need. We have a lot of kids who are interested in robotics or the medical field, so these classes are ways to provide that curriculum for these types of students." Brunswick Middle School earned the distinguished gateway school award by offering Project Lead the Way gateway units at each grade level, ensuring at least half of students participate in the program and demonstrating that at least a quarter of students complete two or more units in middle school. "At our middle school, we offer a variety of Project Lead the Way classes that address activities like automation and robotics," Geschke said. "There's a design and modeling class, a medical detective class and a science of technology class. What's great about it is this is available to any student, so it's not an honor class." Brunswick High School received the distinguished high school designation by offering at least three Project Lead the Way courses and demonstrating that either a quarter of students participate in the courses or that a third of Project Lead the Way students take two or more courses. "At the high school, we have four different classes: biomedical science, human body systems, medical interventions and biomedical innovation," Geschke said. "Our students take these as an elective credit, and they get opportunities to be involved in very engaging, very hands-on, rigorous material." Geschke believes that the teachers and the curriculum are what lead to high enrollment in these courses. "This is years of work by our teachers, establishing the reputation of the classes," he said. "They're going to be challenging, but they're going to be fun. Kids are going to learn a lot." Project Lead the Way courses show the district's commitment to its Journey of a Blue Devil competencies, Geschke said. "We want to offer rigorous, engaging courses rooted in relationships to help give kids a phenomenal experience during their time here with us," he said. "I think it speaks to the fact that we're doing our job as a district to be able to provide these opportunities for our kids. I think the credit lies with our teachers."
