Brunswick looking to replace snowplow

BRUNSWICK — The city is working toward replacing an obsolete snowplow with new equipment in the coming future. Brunswick City Council approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to purchase an 8-ton truck cab and chassis from Northern Ohio Peterbilt of Cleveland in an amount not to exceed approximately $139,000 during its meeting Monday. The new vehicle will be used by the service department. Service Director Paul Magovac said it was prebid through Sourcewell's joint purchasing program, and the truck cab and chassis will take between six to eight months to arrive. The salt equipment and body of the truck are anticipated to be put in the service department's 2027 budget to complete the vehicle, he said. The turnaround for the body company is 12 to 16 months. "I figure we'll probably have another $150,000 just in the snow equipment," Magovac said. "It's about $300,000 total to build a brand new truck." The new vehicle will replace one that is about 20 years old, he said. The old one will be sold at a public auction. "Normally, when you're getting 20 years out of equipment, it's time to start replacing since they'll really nickel and dime you after that," Magovac said. "A lot of the steel rusts, even though some of it is stainless steel. It still puts it through the wringer, especially the plow and the bed." Also during the meeting, Council agreed to discuss Flock safety cameras at its next meeting after residents expressed concerns regarding their presence in the city. Residents listed potential issues with the cameras such as the large scale surveillance network being abused or hacked by someone. The matter will be a topic of discussion at the city's safety and environment committee meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
