High school track: Highland duo finishes 1-2 in hurdles at SL American meet

TALLMADGE — The final day of the Suburban League American Conference Meet began with a bang for the Highland girls track and field team, as Celia Pylypiak and Audrey Hartschuh battled it out in the 100-meter hurdles. Pylypiak came out with the victory, narrowly edging her teammate in a personal-best 16.1 seconds. "We've been hurdling together for a really long time, and we're best friends and we just push each other," Pylypiak said. "Our passion and hard work has just made us better all season. It's been great." To Pylypiak and Hartschuh, it doesn't matter who wins as long as they run their best races with the help of one another. "We're each other's biggest supporters," said Hartschuh, who finished in 16.55. "I want to see her succeed, and if she helps me succeed by succeeding, then that's perfect for me." The pair was excited to kick things off for Highland on Wednesday and had faith that teammates would follow suit. The rest of the team did, as the Hornets finished second with 141 points, falling to Aurora by just 143-141 after the Greenmen won the meet-ending 4x400 relay. "We're coming in here trying to win, and everyone's going to work their hardest to make that happen," Pylypiak said. "They're going to dig deep and bring the energy, trust the process, trust their training and just go out there and get it." Pylypiak followed her 100 hurdles win with another victory in the 300s, finishing in 46.71 to defend her title. "This was my goal for the day," Pylypiak said. "Not being able to win the 100 before and now winning them tonight is amazing, and then taking another win in the 300 has just been my dream come true. I just keep putting in the work and hoping that the reward comes from all of it." In the final individual race, the Hornets' Katie Schuler picked up the win in the 3,200. After being sick earlier in the week, she paced Aurora's Audrey Miller for the first 5½ laps of the eight-lap race before taking the lead and pulling away to finish in 11:07.83, nearly 11 seconds better than Miller. "My goal was just to let someone else start the race and see what I could do from there," Schuler said. "I felt our pace slowing down, and I could feel her stride shortening a bit, but I felt that I had a lot left in me." In the field, Bria Riedy cleared 11-4 to win the pole vault. Teammate Anna Coleman was third (10-0). "I was kind of surprised the bar stayed on in the first place," Riedy said with a laugh. "(Finishing first and third) is really huge, because we're both sophomores. We've both come such a long way. I'm really proud of both of us." Riedy then went out and finished fourth in the 200, running a personal-best 27.06. "Fourth is still pretty good, and I PR'd," Riedy said. "So first and fourth and plus the PR, I'm pretty proud of myself for competing like that in the Suburban League." The Highland 4x1 of Audrey Whiting, Scout Marquis, Hartschuh and Anna Coleman and 4x2 of Whiting, Marquis, Hartschuh and Ally Gryskiewicz finished second, while the 4x8 of Pylypiak, Madison Forshey, Olivia Keough and Schuler and 4x4 of Pylypiak, Forshey, Gryskiewicz and Jordyn Caples were third. Audrey Wendl was second in the shot put (34-10) and discus (120-08). Despite not winning the meet, Highland was happy with the work it put in. "Everyone is working their butts off," Pylypiak said. "They're all giving their 100% effort. Being a part of this team is so inspiring, and I'm just so passionate about it." The Highland boys finished fifth with 63 points. Aurora won with 143. The only victory for the Hornets was in the 4x8 on Monday, as Colton Klein, Andrew Bossart, Andrew Welch and John Hildebrand finished in 8:03.61. The 4x1 of Dylan Lazar, Christopher Metzger, Carson Martens-Kwiatowski and Frankie Iannaggi finished third. Hildebrand had the only top-three finish individually with a third in the 1,600.
