QB Taylen Green stands out on field, among QBs: 'I really don't think there's anybody like me'

BEREA — Taylen Green was impossible to miss.Whether standing alone in the middle of the field in his orange No. 15 jersey. Firing a pass down the seam. Or taking off on a scramble with the long strides of a sprinter.During the first practice of rookie minicamp Friday, Green stood out. That was to be expected for the 6-foot-6, 227-pounder with a strong arm, 4.36 speed, a 43 1/2-inch vertical jump and 11-2 broad jump.Fano brothers relish opportunity to play together again, share tales of fighting, competing growing upEven he struggles to find an adequate comparison among NFL quarterbacks, past or present."I would say, of course, Lamar (Jackson), but he ain't 6-6," Green, a sixth-round pick out of Arkansas, said after practice. "Josh Allen is close, but I'm 230, he's like 260. My dad says Randall Cunningham-ish."I really don't think there's anybody like me. Not on no like cocky or anything, just some confidence. There's nobody that moves like me that's as tall as me."NFL quarterbacks are getting shorter by the year, including recent No. 1 overall picks Kyler Murray and Bryce Young at under 6-foot. Green likes being on the other end of the spectrum with Joe Flacco."Oh, it helps a lot," he said. "The air's a little bit thin, though. Oxygen a little bit thin, but it helps a lot to see everything."Green is grounded. While he believes he will become a quality NFL starter, he realizes he's got a long way to go.Despite the perhaps unparalleled physical gifts, he fell to the first pick of the sixth round in a weak quarterback draft class. He threw 20 interceptions and fumbled 17 times in his final two college seasons, completing 61 percent for 5,868 yards.Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah won't play in 2026, missing second straight season, after being placed on PUP listHis delivery is long, which leads to passes arriving late, and he stressed the need to improve his footwork."It first starts with doing it in your hotel room or doing it when nobody's watching, just reps," he said. "You have to get those reps. Then after that it's doing it in (individual drills) in practice. Just trying to build that habit so when you're in the game or when you're in team period, you're not thinking about it, it's just second nature. So it's just all about reps and getting that practice time."I got a lot to get better at, just quicken up my feet, just cleaning up, quickening my reads and stuff like that."He didn't do a lot from under center with the Razorbacks, so that's another adjustment as he learns coach Todd Monken's system and about life in the NFL. The draft picks and free agent rookie signees got a headstart on the minicamp by having Zoom meetings with coaches following the draft.Zone Coverage Podcast"He's carried over the Zoom meetings to this morning's meetings and then walk(through)," Monken said. "He operated the offense pretty well for someone who hadn't been a part of it. Eyes weren't always in the right spot, but you could see a couple of times some of the things he can do with his feet when plays break down. So that's exciting to see."While there's plenty of work left to be done, Green has evolved since his early college days at Boise State."You can see from when he was at Boise to then getting with Bobby Petrino and the guys at Arkansas, he's come a long way," Monken said. "You can see that already and there's still a next jump that he can make. It's exciting to have him out here and let him just play through some things."Obviously this is the time for him to get reps. Once we get into OTAs in another week, that's really going to diminish. You're not going to see as much of him because of the numbers, but I'm excited. I'm excited for him. He's a great kid and everything we've heard about him so far has been true."When the veterans join the practices, Green will drop from No. 1 to No. 4 on the depth chart. Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are competing for the starting job, with Dillon Gabriel also in the mix. Green said he briefly met Sanders on Thursday."I'm just really excited, they have experience in the league and having high success at a high level," Green said. "So I'm just the young pup. I feel like a freshman again and just trying to take everything in and learn at a steep curve. I'm going to probably get on their nerves and ask a lot of questions, but that's OK."Green was happy to be back practicing, rather than training for the scouting combine and his pro day."It feels good to finally play ball," he said.But the workouts ahead of the draft affirmed what scouts saw when he played: He's a physical freak, especially for the position. His 40, vertical and broad jump were the best at the combine for a quarterback since at least 2003, according to ESPN Research.He said he didn't train to set records."I really didn't know what I was going to run before, because that was my first time running. I didn't run it in practice," he said. "That was my goal. I mean, I've always been able to jump, hurdle and all that."Green rushed for 777 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025, which could tempt Monken to have a package of plays for him in games. He would have to prove valuable enough in that role to occupy one of the limited gameday roster spots as the No. 3 quarterback."Probably too early to tell that, but I could say that anybody with that kind of athleticism, should he progress in certain areas of his game, I think there would be a possibility of him, whether it's short yardage, once you get in the low red zone, maybe some third-down stuff that we could utilize," Monken said."It definitely means a lot. Just the vision that he has for me," Green said. "Especially rookie year, I'm just here to help the team win, no matter what I have to do. I'm blessed to have this opportunity and blessed to have them draft me because not a lot of people get that opportunity. So if it's just running somebody over to get that touchdown, I'm going to run somebody over."Green sees himself eventually growing into a quality starter."I'm pretty confident," he said. "Honestly, my confidence doesn't come from my ability. My confidence comes from God, from Jesus, he gave me opportunities to do this."A lot of people said I wouldn't be here, but you can't listen to them.
