Brunswick Hills police renewal levy passes in May election

BRUNSWICK HILLS TWP. — Brunswick Hills residents voted to pass the Brunswick Hills police renewal levy, according to unofficial election results from Tuesday's election. The unofficial election results are from all 124 precincts in Medina County. There were 1,023 ballots cast in support of the levy, which was around 59 percent of the vote, while 703 ballots were against the levy, which was approximately 41 percent of the vote. "I'm very happy," Police Chief Tim Sopkovich said. "It's a pleasure to serve this community of Brunswick Hills. I'm glad for the support we get from the community to continue to serve and protect them." It was a 2.5-mill police renewal levy that will last five years and raise $845,000 annually. The cost for taxpayers is $56 per $100,000 in assessed home value a year. Brunswick Hills residents initially passed the levy in 2016 and renewed it for the first time in 2021. It is one of three levies the police department operates on. The others are a 2002 levy that brings in $554,000 a year, and a 2008 levy that raises $855,000 annually. The levy's funding will go toward running the daily operations of the police department. Expenses include personnel and upgrading vehicles and equipment. "It's a renewal levy, so it maintains the same level of police protection by paying our officers and keeping them on the road," Sopkovich said.
