College notes: Brunswick grad Samantha Roth cleans up at OAC meet

Samantha Roth finished her Ohio Athletic Conference career with more hardware, as the Ohio Northern University senior was named OAC Outdoor Distance Runner of the Year after her triumphs at the conference meet. The Brunswick graduate opened by taking the 10,000-meter race with a time of 38:13.03, finishing 13.48 seconds ahead of second-place Ashley Cooper of Mount Union. The next day, Roth tried to improve on her position in the 5,000, where she finished second as a sophomore and third as a junior. She did just that, winning the event in 17:49.56, finishing 2.17 seconds ahead of Kate Thormeier of Otterbein. Women's track and field Ohio Wesleyan junior Addie Beck (Wadsworth) tied for second in the pole vault at 3.38 meters at the North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. The Battling Bishops' Stephanie Novak (3.23) tied for fifth. Men's track and field Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Tanner Sir Louis (Wadsworth) finished fourth in the pole vault at 4.39 meters at the NCAC Outdoor Championships. Softball Wooster senior Emma Hetkey (Highland) had a season-high four hits, including a double, in a win at Ohio Northern. She also scored a season-high three runs. Allegheny (Pa.) junior Morgan Kinney (Brunswick) had the first three-hit game of her career, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs in a win over Pitt-Bradford. Sophomore Emily Miller (Highland) had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and three RBIs as Indiana University of Pennsylvania defeated Gannon. That game came in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak. Baseball Bryant & Stratton redshirt sophomore Tyler Biskup (Cloverleaf) had multiple games with four RBIs, going 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and two walks in a win over Clark State and 2-for-4 with a double and two walks in a win over Lakeland Community College. Cuyahoga Community College freshman Lincoln Briggs (Medina) picked up his first career win, giving up just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out five in 5 1/3 innings in a 9-1 victory over Lakeland Community College. Cuyahoga Community College sophomore Nathan Hill (Medina) had two homers and three RBIs in a win over Edison State. It was his second game in a row with three RBIs, and he extended that streak to three later that day in the second game of a doubleheader. Junior Henry Mates (Brunswick) tossed a season-high 5 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out five as Findlay defeated Bluffton. Malone sophomore Finn Schmitt (Wadsworth) earned the decision in a victory over Thomas More (Ky.), throwing five innings and allowing four runs (0 earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out a season-high eight. Bryant & Stratton freshman Talon Willbond (Wadsworth) hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs in a win over Lakeland Community College. Women's lacrosse Ashland junior Ashley Drexler (Brunswick) tied her season high with four goals and added three assists in a 22-3 win over Walsh in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals. She then had three goals and three assists in a 22-6 championship win over Tiffin. Freshman Maggie O'Neill (Medina) made four saves against five shots on goal in 15 minutes as Grand Valley State (Mich.) defeated Davenport (Mich.). Women's golf Kent State sophomore Isabella Goyette (Highland) tied for ninth at the Mid-American Conference Championships, shooting a 4-over-par 214. She was named second-team All-MAC. California-Pennsylvania senior Ari Kaser (Wadsworth) finished ninth at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships, shooting a 27-over 243 (80-76-87). Men's golf Junior Brian Myers (Wadsworth) tied for sixth at the OAC Championships, shooting a 3-over 219 (75-75-69) and helping Mount Union capture the title.
