High school track: Brunswick boys, girls beat Medina

MEDINA — The Brunswick and Medina track and field teams met for the final time as Greater Cleveland Conference foes Wednesday, and the Blue Devils walked away with a sweep via a 84.5-52.5 boys victory and 80-57 girls triumph. As has been the case for most of the spring, one of the storylines was weather. While the rain moved out of the area, the event was held with overcast skies and temperatures that dipped into the 40s. "I'm sick of the weather, but hopefully it gets better soon," said Medina senior Brooke Diello, who won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. "I'm ready for warm weather. I'm ready to for PR weather, because this is not great weather to PR. But everyone's in the same weather." The Brunswick girls swept the field events, as Kya Swann took the shot put (37 feet, 5 inches) and discus (115-2), Zaria Roberts the long jump (17-1.50), Natalie Tracy the high jump (5-0) and Eleni Rahas the pole vault (10-6). "(Sweeping the field events) is important," Swann said. "It's good that we can all work together and win as a team." On the track, the Blue Devils were led by Mackenzie Soeder, who won the 400 in a time of 1:01.32. Reese Nolan won the 800, while Natalie Verlinden took the 300 hurdles at 50.57. "It was definitely important just to see where everyone on our team is at," Soeder said. "A lot of our team members are hurt right now, and we lost a lot of our good seniors last year, so we need everyone just to step up as best they can." Diello was the was the only multiple winner for the Bees, capturing the 100 in 12.33 and 200 in 25.29. She did her best to keep a positive mindset and not let the weather bother her. "You kind of have to just push through," she said. "We never know what the weather is going to be like at conferences or at districts or at regionals, and everyone is running in the same weather. I feel like, especially when it's cold, it's more mental than physical. Yeah, you're cold, but if you tell yourself that, then you're probably going to run worse." Other winners for the Bees were Julia Dietrich (1,600, 5:30.18) and Ruby Lloyd (100 hurdles, 16.52). On the boys side, Brunswick sophomore Jacob Sepesy took home the top spots in the 200 and 400, finishing at 22.10 in the former and defeating Medina's Jackson Riffle by 0.04 and teammate Kainoa Piskach by 0.05 in the latter with a 51.57. "I feel like mentally, it's one of the most fun things I'd say for the sport," Sepesy said. "It pushes me the most. Racing against my teammate Kai in the 400 and then Riffle in the 200 just pushed me more with the close finishes." Piskach won the 110 hurdles (15.13), while Tommy Strippy (800, 2:01.27) and Dennis Goodhart (300 hurdles, 42.06) also picked up wins on the track. The Blue Devils won three of the four relays. Like Swann, Eli Nichols swept the shot put and discus throws for Brunswick with a 52-3.5 in the shot and 151-8 in the discus. Siddarth Ranganathan picked up the long jump win at 19-6.50. For the Bees, Riffle won the 100 (11.10), Liam Meade the 1,600 (4:34.03), Riley Dworznik the 3,200 (10:00.45), Bishop Burch the high jump (5-8) and Owen Stepsis the pole vault (13-80. At the end of the day, everyone was impacted by Mother Nature. "The weather was a little bit disappointing, to say the least," Sepsey said.
