Brunswick High School construction anticipated to wrap up next year

BRUNSWICK — Construction of the new Brunswick High School is set to continue for the next 13 months in anticipation of opening for the 2027-28 school year. Brunswick Schools' architecture and construction team presented an update on the district's construction project at the board of education meeting Tuesday. Alex Grossman from Hammond Construction said about 380,000 blocks of the 423,000 blocks needed for the new high school have been laid so far. The shell of the academic wing is built, and walls for the auditorium still need to be placed. "We have also started your brick, so the actual shell of your building and the colors are going to start taking shape around the west side of (academic wing) area one," he said. "You're going to see it just continue to flow all the way around the building through the summer months." The peak number of workers on site at one time is 140, Grossman said. To date, there have been 450 workers on site, and a lot of them are local with union participation. "It's been great, and there's a lot more to come," he said. "I just had to order an additional 250 hard hat stickers today, so we're going to keep those numbers going up." Derrick Semilia from Hammond Construction said the construction team has hosted multiple tours of the site since the high school groundbreaking in 2025. The community would be invited on the next big tour in the fall once the building is enclosed. "We're really excited to continue to serve Brunswick City Schools, and I just want to thank you for the opportunity to continue to work with you," he said. Scott Alleman from ThenDesign Architecture said the foundations are starting to be laid for the new additions at Applewood and Kidder elementary schools. The goal is to have the new classrooms be ready for the start of the 2026-27 school year. "There has been a lot of coordination and communication with the principals and the staff at both of those schools, and it's very much appreciated," Grossman said. "They have been awesome to work with, giving us the flexibility to do as much work as we can, but also trying to be flexible with them and the students that are occupying those buildings."
