College notes: Wadsworth's Brian Myers gets two first-place finishes on links for Mount Union

April has been busy for Mount Union junior golfer Brian Myers, including two first-place finishes. After the Wadsworth graduate tied for first at the Ohio Athletic Conference Spring Preview with a round of 68, he took home sole possession of first with a 72 at the Peter C. Rossin Invitational hosted by Washington & Jefferson at Southpointe Golf Club in Cecil Township, Pa. Myers also led Mount Union with a sixth-place finish at Spring Phipps Memorial at Glenmoor Country Club with a 75. He tied for eighth with a 152 (77-75) at the Mount Union Spring Invitational at Tannenhauf Golf Club and tied for 12th at the Otterbien Easter Leftovers Invitational at Northstar Golf Club with a 79. Men's track and field University of Akron redshirt senior Owen Wendl (Highland) won the shot put and discus at the John Papa Invitational. His throw of 62 feet, 1 inch in the shot put extended his school record. Women's track and field Ohio Northern senior Samantha Ross (Brunswick) took the 10,000-meter run in a time of 37:38.56 at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships. Women's softball Malone sophomore Jessie Crookston (Wadsworth) had her first three-hit games of the season in losses to Hillsdale and Ashland. She tripled in both games and added a double against Ashland. Wooster senior Emma Hetkey (Highland) went 5-for-6 with a double, three runs and two RBIs in a doubleheader split against Oberlin. Through 26 games, she is hitting .349. Indiana University of Pennsylvania sophomore Emily Miller (Highland) had two hits apiece in a pair of wins over California-Pennsylvania and a victory over Seton Hill (Pa.). Through 32 games, she was hitting .302. Baseball Akron redshirt junior John Allen (Wadsworth) picked up his first win of the season, pitching four shutout innings and allowing just one hit with two strikeouts against Youngstown State. Walsh junior Zach Barber (Brunswick) picked up his first win of the season in an 8-7 victory over Thomas More (Ky.), throwing two innings and allowing one unearned run on a walk and a hit. Cuyahoga Community College freshman Lincoln Briggs (Medina) had his best outing of the season in a loss to Baldwin Wallace, pitching three scoreless innings and allowing one hit and one run while striking out five. Baldwin Wallace sophomore Yuri Bellina (Padua Franciscan/Medina resident) hit his first career home run in a win over Mount Union. He then had his first multi-hit game two games later against John Carroll with a single and a double. Cuyahoga Community College sophomore Ethan Green (Wadsworth) hit his first home run of the season for in a win over Point Park (Pa.). Cuyahoga Community College sophomore Nathan Hill (Medina) had a double, home run and four RBIs in a win over Lakeland Community College. In 30 games this season, he is hitting .360 with four homers. Wittenberg senior Ashton Newton (Cloverleaf) had the first three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-6 with a pair of RBIs in a 17-8 win over John Carroll. Bryant & Stratton sophomore Max Wagar (Highland) picked up a win, tossing seven innings of three-hit ball and allowing just one run against Clark State College. Men's lacrosse Heidelberg sophomore Colin Parker (Brunswick) scored a pair of goals in losses to Muskingum and Spalding (Ky.). Earlham (Ind.) senior Ryan Polack (Wadsworth) scored a season-high three goals in a 9-8 loss to Spalding (Ky.). Women's lacrosse John Carroll sophomore Abby Cassidy (Medina) had back-to-back multi-goal games, scoring twice in a loss to Kenyon and three times in a win over Wittenberg. She has scored multiple goals in eight of the last 10 games and has 23 goals in 13 games. Ashland junior Ashley Drexler (Brunswick) scored a season-high four goals in a win over Malone. She also had a pair of goals in wins over Walsh and Northwood and has scored multiple goals in 13 of 16 games played this season. Ursuline's freshman Grace Chernow (Brunswick) finished the season by scoring a goal against Thomas More (Ky.), her second of the season. Women's golf Kent State sophomore Isabella Goyette (Highland) finished fourth at Ohio State's Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational with a score of 3-over 219 (76-70-73), helping Kent State finish third. California-Pennsylvania senior Ari Kaser (Wadsworth) tied for third place at the Fighting Scot Spring Invitational at the Country Club of Meadville with a score of 30-over 174 (92-82).
