Boys lacrosse: Wadsworth's Preston Davis gets redemption, scores game-winner in OT against Medina

WADSWORTH — Second chances don't always come around, so Wadsworth senior Preston Davis made sure to be ready Saturday . Moments after missing a pass that could have given Davis a chance to score the game-winning goal for the Grizzlies boys lacrosse team, he grabbed a feed from Braydan Todd and found the back of the net with 17 seconds remaining in overtime for a 12-11 non-league victory over Medina at Art Wright Memorial Stadium. "That was great," Davis said. "I missed that pass at the end, but I redeemed myself. That was a big win, and we played with all heart." There was never any doubt in Todd's mind that Davis, who finished with three goals and one assist, would come through for the Grizzlies (7-3). "My guy Preston, I hit him on the top key and he nailed it," Todd said. "Preston's my guy. Me and him are a duo in practice, playing from 'X' and right attack. We always have little matchups together and love it. "We feed off each other's energy. He's a huge energy guy, which gets me hyped and leads to goals." Todd finished with three goals and a game-high four assists. He also gave Wadsworth its last lead before Davis' winner when he made the score 6-5 early in the third quarter after a long run to the front of the goal. The latest edition of the rivalry exceeded expectations with nine ties and seven lead changes. The Grizzlies have now won two straight and four of the last seven against the Bees (6-3). "The juices are flowing," Todd said. "I was like shaking out there because of excitement. We've been in this situation before, so I wasn't nervous, but so excited. I wanted this one so bad, and I'm so happy." Along with Davis and Todd, Deacon Johnson scored two goals and Owen Anderson and Cogan Wilson each tallied one goal and one assist. Every goal in the second and third quarter either tied or gave a new team the lead, but that changed when Medina scored back-to-back goals to grab a 9-7 advantage. The first came from Caleb Miller on a pass from Lach Talley, while the second was unassisted by Will Ivey. The Bees held the lead until Anderson scored on a ball from Todd to tie 10-10 with 2:39 remaining. Miller followed with his third goal of the quarter to give Medina an 11-10 lead with 2:12 left, but Johnson answered on a pass by Todd with 1:27 left in regulation. "The fourth quarter was really close," Miller said. "In the end, the little things got us. We got exactly what we wanted in the OT, but we couldn't pass and catch, so we lost the ball. They ended up scoring off that." Miller scored a game-high five goals. His efforts were supported by Talley and Ivey, who each contributed three goals and two assists. Bryson Hoffman also had two assists. Todd gave Wadsworth a 1-0 lead nearly five minutes into the first quarter, but Medina answered back with three straight goals by Ivey, Talley and Miller and finished the period ahead 3-2 after Wilson lobbed a pass nearly the length of the field to Davis. The Grizzlies tied and then took the 4-3 lead on a spinning shot by Brad Watson in the only two goals of the second quarter.
