Keith Sooy memorial set for Saturday at Medina High School

A celebration of life for legendary high school boys basketball coach Keith "Butch" Sooy will be held Saturday at Medina High's Richard H. Clevidence Gymnasium. Visitation will take place from 1 to 3 p.m., with a service lasting from 3 to 4, followed by two more hours of visitation and refreshments. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Let's Make A Difference, P.O. Box 241, Medina. Sooy, who died on March 23 at the age of 79, compiled a 423-145 record in 26 seasons as a head coach. Best known for never receiving a technical foul, he also spent 32 seasons as an assistant in a career that saw him coach basketball for 58 consecutive seasons beginning in 1968. As a head coach, the 5-foot-8, 155-pound Sooy won eight league titles in 11 seasons at Firelands (188-45, 1972-83), one in four years at Elyria (65-27, 1983-87) and four in 11 seasons at Medina (170-73, 1987-98). Sooy, a basketball and baseball standout at Keystone High (1964) and the University of Findlay (1968), also served as an assistant at numerous high schools, including Brunswick, Buckeye, Medina and Highland.
