High school track: Medina girls prevail at Tom Fasko Relays

MEDINA — The Medina girls track and field team won its 10th straight contested Tom Fasko Medina Relays on Saturday, when the Bees celebrated the present and honored the past. Medina (92) outlasted Highland and Twinsburg, who tied for second with 74 points, to continue its streak that began in 2015. The 2016 event was cancelled due to snow, while the 2020 season was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Led by Brooke Diello's wins in the 200-meter dash (25.19) and with Mariana Cunningham, Michaela Gwinn and Esme Rodriguez in the 4x200 (1:43.44), Medina won the 37th edition of the meet for the first time on the new track at Kenneth Dukes Stadium. "It's a great day," senior Alexis Warnement said. "It's amazing getting to host our own meet. We're on our home turf. Running on our new track is great and we get to show it off. It feels fresh." Warnement ran the 1,600 anchor leg of the winning distance medley relay (13:00.49) after Alanya Yanmaz, Skyler Jacobs and Julia Dietrich. Along with celebrating the new track, Medina also honored longtime coach Scott VanFleet, who ended his 42 years of coaching the Bees this season, with the Friends of Medina Cross Country and Track and Field Award. "Fleet was one of my favorite coaches ever," Diello said. "He's very straightforward and knows what he's doing. He deserved it because he's been here for so long. I'm glad he's back here today supporting us, because it's been like a year since we've seen him." The Highland girls got wins by Katie Schuler in the 3,200 (10:57.54) and the long jump relay of Allison Gryskiewicz (16 feet), Bridget Cope (14-9) and Ashley Moore (14-2) that had a total of 44-11. "They weren't my best long jumps, but we got first as a team," Gryskiewicz said. "We were very successful and just have to keep improving every meet." On the boys' side, Medina (86) was third behind Mentor (135) and Woodridge (100). Jackson Riffle won the long jump with a of 21-6 and helped Nate Fischer, Liam Meade and Carson Henning close the meet with a win in the 4x4 (3:24.26). Riffle was two-hundredths of a second in the 200 (21.86) from being a three-event winner but was edged by Twinsburg's Sam Taneja. "There's a lot of competition here, so I'm happy that I have the opportunity to come out here," Riffle said. "I'm pretty happy with how I performed. I wish I could do a little bit better, but I just have to put more work into it." The Hornets (31, 9th) got their best finish on the boys side by Andrew Welch, who took fourth in the 3,200 (10:04.16). The Medina girls also won the high jump. Anna Carpenter and Ari Schwemley each cleared 4-10, while Kalea Tagalicod jumped 4-6 for a total of 14-2. Although Diello came up just short of breaking the 200 meet record she set last season, she showcased that is already dialed into her signature event. "I feel like I still have a little bit more to go," Diello said. "I don't feel bad, but it's still early, so I'm not hard on myself. It feels good being able to come out here and run outside in good weather. The next few weeks I feel like my times are going to start dropping." Warnement was able to pull away on the final leg of the distance medley after being put in good position by her teammates. "Going into this race, our coach (Phil Brewer) built a really competitive DMR," Warnement said. "We wanted to have a good race and I think we did just that. (Yanmaz) ran a really strong 1,200. (Jacobs), our freshman, came in and ran a great 400 for her. (Dietrich) closed some gaps and passed some people with her 800. "I just got out there and ran my race." Schuler was pushed to her personal best by Tallmadge's Makayla Martuccio, who finished 0.75 seconds behind in a personal-record 10:58.39. "I'm very proud," Schuler said. "My goal was to go sub-11, and I did that and also I knew there was going to be a ton of tough competition here. My goal was just to stick with Makayla and hope I had something left in me."
