Notes: Carson Schwesinger, Tyson Campbell quick fans of DC Mike Rutenberg's 'addictive' positive energy

BEREA — The transition to Mike Rutenberg as defensive coordinator kicked into high gear this week with the start of the voluntary offseason program.He didn't need long to make an impression."It's been great," linebacker and Defensive Rookie of the Year Carson Schwesinger said Wednesday. "Getting to know him, a lot of energy, somebody that I'll be talking to every day and working with closely and I think good things are going to come from it. I'm excited."Todd Monken happy with start of offseason program, wants to establish 'a team that nobody wants to play'"You bring in that type of positive energy into a room, it's so addictive and I feel like everybody around him can pick off of that energy," cornerback Tyson Campbell said. "And that's what you want out of a defensive coordinator, a guy that's passionate about ball, passionate about his guys, and it's contagious and other dudes around the room will be able to open up and reflect that same energy around the locker room."Rutenberg, 44, is a coordinator for the first time and replaced Jim Schwartz, who resigned when he didn't get the head coaching job. Schwartz had a ton of success and was well-liked and well-respected by the players."I think the response has been great," Schwesinger said of the switch. "Obviously everyone loves Schwartz and we all loved playing for him, but the mindset still is the same. We're going in and we're finding out how we can be the best defense we can be with the coaches that are around us. And we have great coaches around this year too. And just looking forward to being able to do that."The assistants on the defensive staff were kept, which will help with continuity as Rutenberg tweaks the system."Every coach comes in with what they want their pillars to be and the mindset," Schwesinger said. "As a defense, we're trying to build on what we did last year and we're still with the attack front and we're going to get after people. That's really the mindset there."Campbell said Rutenberg hasn't yet discussed if he'll use as much man coverage as Schwartz did. Campbell called people he knew with the Falcons to ask about Rutenberg."Talked about how passionate and how much of a player coach he is and how much he loves his guys and he loves the game of football," Campbell said.MISSING OUTTodd Monken and the Rams' Sean McVay were not in the annual coaches picture taken at the league meetings last week in Phoenix."I was trying to get a sweet haircut," Monken said. "And then they moved the (picture). Now you can claim that I should've been at the meeting when they moved it up and that's when my a** would have known that's when it was. Yeah, OK, I've got you."And was it disappointing? You bet your a** it was disappointing. Waited my whole life to be a head coach and I'm not in the head coaches picture? You think with AI they could have done that quickly and got me in there."WHO'S UP FIRST?The Browns get an extra voluntary minicamp because they have a new coach. It will be April 21-23 and feature practices.That means Monken needs a depth chart."We're going to have to line up. In two weeks, we're going to have to roll the first unit out there," he said. "And there's some past history that plays in that and then a little bit of guesswork where they're at, what we've seen up till this point in the classroom and maybe a little bit of what we've heard. That all goes into it, but eventually it'll all work itself out."But whatever the number of reps, it doesn't eliminate the competition. Players decide who plays. I don't decide who plays. And it's not where they start, it's where they finish."BUSY BEESAs the coaches run the offseason program, they're also involved in preparation for the draft that begins April 23."It's fine. Nothing hard. Just takes some time," Monken said. "We were ready for the guys to come back, so there's not as much preparation that I've needed for the first two weeks in terms of meetings.
