Rosemary B. Carey

Rosemary B. Carey, 96, passed away April 7, 2024 at home in Hinckley, Ohio. She was born June 6, 1927, in Lebanon, Ohio, at the home of her parents, Lorene (Hubbard) and Claude H. Bernard. She had fond memories of her childhood home, the large house at the corner of Silver and Mechanic Streets, where her mother operated a beauty parlor and her father's 'battery shop' was just next door. She enjoyed the visits to her grandparents' farms in Clinton County and the animals there. Rosemary and her mother moved to Wilmington when she was in her teens. The summer after graduating Wilmington High School in 1945, she worked as a secretary for the army at what would become Wright Patterson Air Force Base. She was attending Wilmington College that Fall when she met Charles Carey, who was back in school after returning from the service. They would marry in 1946 and begin raising a family together. Rosemary and her young family lived in McConnelsville, Wilmington, and Columbus before moving to Medina in 1963 when her husband took a position with Medina City Schools. All three of her children would graduate from Medina Senior High School. Though she had a number of part-time jobs over the years, Rosemary was foremost a homemaker: a supportive partner to her husband and a loving mother to her children. Always an avid reader, she listened to audio books and public radio when her sight failed in later years. (Thank you to the people at the Medina County Public Library). She was an animal lover, and pets were always family. Her compassion for animals led her to keep a vegetarian diet for thirty years. Her husband passed in 2001. For the last 16 years she lived with her son in Hinckley. We will always miss her kindness, encouragement, and sense of humor. Rosemary was survived by her three children, Lorrie Campbell of Columbus, Ohio, Charles D. Carey (Lisa) of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Chris Carey (Joyce Cerasi) of Hinckley, Ohio; granddaughter, Elizabeth Caverly (Bob) of Barrington, New Hampshire; grandson, Dallas Carey (Amy) of York, Maine; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Jack Caverly; and Tinkerbell, Harlow, and Tommi. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant, brother Roger Bernard; her husband of fifty-five years, Charles E. Carey; daughter-in-law, Lynn Abeling Carey, and son-in-law, Roderick B. Campbell. The family would like to express their gratitude to all of kind and conscientious people who cared for Rosemary in her last years. A graveside service was held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Medina. Waite & Son handled the arrangements. Rosemary would have appreciated charitable contributions to Hospice of the Western Reserve, and no-kill animal shelters, such as Pet Shelter operated by the Northeast Ohio SPCA.
