High school track: Brunswick boys, girls finish third at Avon Lake Invite

AVON LAKE — The Brunswick track and field teams had strong third-place showings at the Avon Lake Invitational on Saturday. The boys had 84.5 points to place behind Walsh Jesuit (99.5) and Avon (86.5), while the girls had 80 points behind Avon (122) and GlenOak (102.5). All three first-place finishes came from the boys, highlighted by Kainoa Piskach sweeping the hurdles. Piskach won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.20 seconds, which was 0.13 better than St. Edward's Joel Knight. Piskach also won the 300s at 40.62, which was 0.72 better than Luke Evans of Chardon. "It was pretty good," Piskach said. "I don't really look at the placings I get. I just look at my time and the points that I get for the team. It's all about the team aspect for me. "I think I did pretty good today. Really the main goal is just to get a school record for both." The only other event the Blue Devils won was the 4x100 relay. Noah Surovey, Ryder Kern, Jacob Sepesy and Eli Nichols clocked a 43.19, which was 0.31 seconds ahead of Walsh Jesuit. "Right at the start Noah, our pop, really gave us a good start," said Sepesy, who also finished second in the 400 in 50.18. "We just got the stick around and did what we needed to do. I would say we did good and we just need to fix some little mistakes, but it's early in the season. We just have to keep practicing and keep pushing it." Nobody on the girls side won for Brunswick, but Zaria Roberts had a strong day, placing second in the long jump at 16 feet, 8.5 inches. She also competed in what was easily the most competitive race of the day, the 400. Roberts, a returning Division I state qualifier, went up against Ally Brediger from Avon, who finished second in the state in the D-I 100 and 200 last season — and Madisyn Frost from Chardon in a photo finish. The Brunswick senior ran down Brediger, but the Eagles sophomore took back the lead in time to win by 0.11 seconds. Frost took second by 0.05, while Roberts clocked in at 58.39. The wind was especially strong during the final stretch. "I think I definitely did good," Roberts said. "I went out like it was my race, I did what I could to come back and it was a good finish, especially with the headwind that we had. That last stretch was definitely tough. It took all of my energy and power to keep pushing and not give up." Brunswick sophomore Kaila Peterson went up against Brediger in the 100 and 200, placing second in both with times of 12.81 and 26.35, respectively. Natalie Tracy took third in the high jump (4-10), while Eleni Rahas finished second in the pole vault (10-3) and Mackenzie Soeder wasthird in the long jump (16-6.75).
