Applications being taken for Ron Schwane Memorial Scholarship

Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the Ron Schwane Memorial Scholarship will be awarded again this year to a senior currently attending a Medina County high school. Schwane, a Gazette freelance photographer for more than 30 years who also had pictures published by Sports Illustrated, The Associated Press and a number of other media outlets, died suddenly on May 18, 2024, at the age of 58. A three-person committee will give special consideration to high school students planning to major in photography, journalism, broadcasting, film or any profession involving the media or athletics. Those interested are asked to submit a 200- to 400-word cover letter detailing their college plans, high school accomplishments and extracurricular involvement. Deadline for submission is April 30, with the person selected receiving a $1,000 scholarship. Applications can be turned in to the main office at the student's high school, with instructions to pass them along to the athletic department. They also can be emailed directly to Gazette staff writer Rick Noland at rnoland@medina-gazette.com. Schwane, a Buckeye High graduate, was a favorite of county athletes. He met and got to know thousands of them over the years and kept in touch with a number of them as they moved into adulthood. The 2025 scholarship winner was Grace Mullen, who split her school day between Brunswick and the Medina County Career Center. The owner of a 4.15 grade-point average and a member of the Brunswick girls bowling team, Mullen was headed to Cleveland State University to study film and media arts. Plans also are under way to continue the scholarship into the future. More details will be made available at a later date.
