Brunswick High School March student of the month Brunswick High School senior Grace Ruth was named student of the month for March. Ruth is enrolled in advanced placement coursework and has served as a guidance office aide throughout all four years of her high school career. She plays a role in the Brunswick High School theater program, contributing as a performer, stage manager and student director. In addition, she is active in several school organizations, including HUDDLE, LINK and Volunteer Opportunities for Teens. She also volunteers at the Brunswick Recreation Center, where she works with local youths. Ruth plans to attend Ohio University in the fall, where she will major in secondary education with a minor in history. "Grace embodies the qualities we aspire for all Brunswick students: the ability to excel academically while making significant contributions to both our school and the community," Superintendent Jason Niedermeyer said. Medina High School speech and debate team achievement More than 200 Medina High School speech and debate students competed in congressional debate at the recent Ohio Speech and Debate Association state tournament. In the Senate chamber, Lincoln Marks earned first place, while Holland Roller placed fifth. In the House chamber, Kate Cline finished third, Kaylee Chalmers placed fourth and Alysia Aldea finished fifth. Mason Heibert advanced to the semifinal chamber, ultimately finishing 19th overall in the tournament. Besides her placement, Chalmers was recognized as the tournament's top presiding officer, which is awarded to the student who demonstrated exceptional leadership and effectiveness in guiding debate. The tournament also awarded scholarships to several top competitors. Marks received a $400 scholarship, and Cline was selected as the winner of the Christian Science Monitor Debate Scholarship, which is worth $500. The Medina High School team also received the Excellence in Debate Award and the Excellence in Coaching Award. Northern Ohio Railway Museum presentation The Northern Ohio Railway Museum will have a presentation on Saturday regarding the early history of trolleys, dating back to the 1800s, presented by Tom Atwood. The presentation will take place at the Hinckley Township administration building, 1410 Ridge Road, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
