High school track: Buckeye pole vaulter Leah Bengough breaks record at Cloverleaf Early Bird Relays

WESTFIELD TWP. — Despite near-freezing temperatures and snow Saturday morning, Buckeye junior pole vaulter Leah Bengough needed no time warming up to the outdoor track and field season. Bengough broke the Cloverleaf Early Bird Relays record with an effort of 9 feet. With only two athletes able to clear the first height, Bengough also earned the Bucks the team win in the event. "It was definitely cold," Bengough said. "I wasn't feeling the best, but once I got out there I told myself, 'Make the best of what you have.'" Bengough definitely did that, clearing the mark on her third attempt at that height. "Definitely I got some confidence out there with getting a head start," she said. "Hey, I started out on a good note for this meet season." Buckeye also got a win from the 4x100 ironwoman relay of Natalie Edenfield, Kerrigan Graves, Maddy Velick and Grace Pronik in 1:02.38. The event was filled with athletes who are primarily throwers. The Cloverleaf girls were led by Amelia Ryncarz, Berkeley Craddock and Addi Reho, who swept the throwing events. The Colts won the discus in 252-11 and the shot put in 85-9. Ryncarz also won the individual shot put with a toss of 29-8. "I'm feeling really good," she said. "I think we're going to have a lot of really good things for this season, especially knowing all of us get along so well and we can all push each other. I think the rest of the season is going to be really fun." Cloverleaf also got a field win in the triple jump with Keegan Williams' 29-5.5. On the track, the Colts' all-freshmen relay won the distance medley in 14:56.15 after Elise Mion ran down North Ridgeville's Reyna Dalveren on the anchor leg. "It's just about seeing the girl in front of you and getting to their shoulder," Mion said. "It's a lot of motivation to have your friends cheering you on." Getting to open the season on its home course gave Cloverleaf an extra dose of motivation. "I think it's really nice because we have our home track, our home throwing rings, our home crowd," Ryncarz said. "It's cool to have that community around and to have all of it at home." On the boys' side, Buckeye was able to overcome a meet-record 166-2 by Firelands' Brett Beury to win the discus title with a total of 354-10. Denis Shevchenko (133-10) was second and Jacob Bally-Freiberg (128-2) was third for the Bucks, while Grady Giles (92-10) rounded out the effort. In the 4x800, Buckeye senior Brady Salazar ran an outstanding anchor leg to pass Cloverleaf's Matthew Jenkins on the final lap as the Bucks took the win in 8:39.19. The Colts finished in 8:41.13. Cloverleaf got off to a great start behind Gazette cross country MVP Caleb Neville and Gavin Forbes, but Buckeye's Gavin Waibel closed the gap enough for Salazar to make his move. "I knew I was going to have to make up some room when we saw Dimitry Pshonyak couldn't be here today," Salazar said. "I had to pace myself to make sure I wouldn't lose it at the end. It was a mental battle. I had to push through the pain to keep gaining on him. The last push was just straight adrenaline." The second in the 4x800 matched the Cloverleaf boys' top finish.
