Boys basketball: Brunswick's Trey Drexler named Division I Ohio Player of the Year

The final lines of Trey Drexler's résumé are coming into focus, as the Brunswick senior was named Division I Player of the Year by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association on Thursday. Already the most decorated boys player in Medina County history, Drexler also is a two-time Mr. Basketball finalist, Greater Cleveland Conference Player of the Year and Northeast Inland District D-I Player of the Year. The 6-foot IU Indy recruit averaged a school-record 26.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting .497 from the floor, .451 from 3-point range and .850 at the foul line this season. The Blue Devils (21-4) set a school record for victories in a regular season (19) and captured a consecutive league championship for the first time. Drexler finished his four-year career with 1,754 points in 91 games, putting him 88 behind longtime leader Rob Wininger of Highland (1,842, 1989-93). Brunswick had a sterling 73-18 record (.802) with the left-hander at point guard. Drexler was one of six county players honored, headlined by Brunswick forward Sean Barnett earning D-I second team. The 6-5 senior averaged 18.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists while drilling a county-leading 74 3-pointers. The Flagler (Fla.) recruit scored an incredible 29 straight points in a district final win over Perrysburg and led the team in scoring nine times. Highland senior power forward Joshua Butcher was D-II special mention. The 6-4 senior averaged 17.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists as the Hornets repeated as Suburban League American Conference champions despite having five new starters. Brunswick center Adin Evert (6-4, jr., 9.6) and Medina center Garrett Myers (6-6, sr., 13.0) were honorable mention in D-I, while Buckeye center Turner Dolata (6-5, sr., 18.1) earned the same distinction in D-III.
