Girls basketball: Wadsworth's Andrew Booth named All-Ohio coach of the year; Lauren Decker on first team

After leading the Wadsworth girls basketball team to its first state semifinal appearance in eight years, Andrew Booth was named the Division I Coach of the Year when the All-Ohio teams were released Tuesday by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association. Senior small forward Lauren Decker was honored with a first-team selection. The Booth-led Grizzlies finished with a 24-3 record and won the Suburban League National Conference that had five regional qualifiers and three regional finalists. Wadsworth fell 53-43 to Princeton in the state semis at University of Dayton Arena, making Booth's record a sterling 418-116 (.783) in 21 seasons. A 5-foot-9 Robert Morris (Pa.) volleyball recruit, Decker averaged 15.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 4.1 steals while shooting .492 from the floor, .367 from 3-point range and .681 at the foul line. Decker also was the SL National and Northeast Inland District D-I player of the year. Honorable mention went to Grizzlies point guard Natalie Moser (5-9, jr., 8.0), shooting guard Julia Maddox (5-8, so, 7.6) and power forward Natalie Maddox (5-8, so., 7.9), as well as Medina center Abby Dress (5-9, sr., 11.5) and Brunswick point guard Adaya Collenette (5-4, jr., 15.3). In D-III, Highland senior point guard Grace Shondel was on the third team. The 5-8 Akron soccer recruit and defensive standout posted 8.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.4 steals, lifting the Hornets to a share of the SL American Conference with D-III state semifinalist Copley and a berth in the regional semifinals. She held multiple All-Ohio guards to single-digit scoring totals this season. Highland sophomore power forward Madi Morgan (5-9, 11.0) was honorable mention.
