College notes: Brunswick alum Gillian Brown named OAC tennis player of the week

Baldwin Wallace women's tennis player Gillian Brown started her senior year with her first career Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week Award. The Brunswick alum didn't drop a set as the Yellow Jackets competed on a spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., going 3-0 at third singles and 3-0 at second doubles. Her singles victories were 6-4, 6-3 over Buena Vista University, 6-1, 6-2 over Lancaster Bible College and 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 over Western New England University. In doubles, she teamed with Samantha Thielen for a 6-1 win over Buena Vista, a 6-2 win over Lancaster Bible and a 6-3 win over Western New England. Men's basketball Walsh sophomore Quinn Barnett (Brunswick) averaged 11.9 points in three NCAA Division II Tournament games. He had a high of 15 in a first-round win over William Jewell (Mo.). Women's basketball Northwood (Mich.) sophomore Lea Holmes (Brunswick) averaged 18.3 points and 7.0 rebounds in three NCAA D-II Tournament games, including 25 points in a loss to Grand Valley State in the regional championships. Men's track and field Akron redshirt senior Owen Wendl (Highland) started the outdoor season with two wins at the Bob Davidson Team Challenge at High Point, winning the shot put with a throw of 58 feet, 11.50 inches and the discus with a 180-3. Women's track and field Ohio Wesleyan junior Addie Beck (Wadsworth) took home the pole vault title at the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a career-best 3.55 meters. Bowling Green sophomore Sierra Podolan (Highland) had a personal-record 42.48 meters in the hammer throw at the Miami Blizzard Buster. Women's swimming and diving Baldwin Wallace sophomore Makenna Mincey (Brunswick native/Magnificat) finished runner-up in the 1-meter dive at the NCAA D-III Diving National Championships with a score of 445.30. Baseball Bryant and Stratton redshirt sophomore Tyler Biskup (Cloverleaf) had a pair of home runs, a double and three RBIs against Hocking. Westminster junior Quinn Marquis (Highland) had three hits and three RBIs in a win over Lancaster Bible. He had other three-hit games in a loss to Dean and in a win over Franciscan. Hiram senior Drew Mason (Wadsworth) had hits in seven straight games while hitting .500 through eight games. He had four hits in a win over Alfred and a homer and four RBIs in a win over Pitt-Bradford. Wittenberg senior Ashton Newton (Cloverleaf) hit his first career home run in a win over Hope. Ohio sophomore Hunter Winston (Highland) picked up a win, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing one run on three hits with three walks and one strikeout in an 8-5 victory over Bowling Green. Men's lacrosse Heidelberg sophomore Colin Parker (Brunswick) scored a career-high five goals Heidelberg in a win over Theil. Earlham (Ind.) senior Ryan Polack (Wadsworth) scored against Hiram, Alma and Franciscan. He added two assists against Franciscan. Women's lacrosse John Carroll sophomore Abby Cassidy (Medina) scored at least three goals in three straight games, including a season-high four in a win over Fredonia. Ashland junior Ashley Drexler (Brunswick) scored multiple goals in six straight games, with three against Northern Michigan and Grand Valley State (Mich.) and two against Quincy (Ill.), Maryville (Mo.), Ursuline and Lake Erie.
