Boys basketball: Both teams running and gunning at annual Hoopla! game

YORK TWP. — Much like the late 1990s television show "Who's Line is it Anyway?" the Hoopla! Medina County Senior All-Star Game was very much about the points not mattering. With a run-and-gun offensive effort by both boys teams, the Light Team consisting of players from host Buckeye, Cloverleaf and Medina picked up a 107-86 win over the Dark Team comprised of Highland, Wadsworth, Brunswick and Medina Christian. In a game where it was tough to single out an individual, the Bees' Garrett Myers took home the MVP award with a strong all-around effort of 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists. "I played the last eight years of my life with these people, and it's about to be over," Myers said after taking the floor with three Medina teammates for the last time. "It is just runs, it is fun and it is like rec ball. We're just here to have a lot of fun." Every player got into the scoring column, and Highland's Joshua Butcher from the Dark team poured in a game-best 21 points. "It's always fun just playing," Butcher said. "No pressure, no nothing. I might have shot a little too much, but it is what it is." Butcher was joined in double-figures by Brunswick's Sean Barnett (14 points) and Medina Christian's Nick Malicoat (11)."It was great to be on the floor with my teammate, Luke Stella," Barnett said. "Trey (Drexler) didn't play, but it was an awesome moment and a great way to end my season. Overall, this was a good experience." Buckeye post Turner Dolata also led the Light Team with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Bucks teammates Derek Snyderburn (17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists) and Austin Hyre (13, 4, 2) were right behind him. "It means a lot and this was really cool, especially with it being on our home floor and being able to play here one more time with the guys," Dolata said. "It's about all of Medina County, and I've read about a lot of these guys in the paper for the last four years." Medina also had a trio of double-digit scorers, as Brody Kopkas (17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists) and Ryan Harubin (15, 1, 1) joined Myers. "We had four players from Medina, and we are really good friends," Kopkas said. "It was fun to play with them one more time. You are playing with guys in Medina County, and it is really fun with those guys. It is more relaxed, nothing is really on the line, just playing basketball." The Bees also took home the 3-point shooting contest, with junior Beckett Miller getting past Hyre 20-15 in the final. Barnett and Black River sophomore Parker Broadsword also competed. The deep-ball shooting carried into the non-stop action, with the teams combining for 32 3-pointers. Behind Snyderburn, who led all players with five, were Kopkas, Hyre, Butcher, Malicoat and Wadsworth's Isaac Byers with three each. Medina Christian's Isaac Maletich nailed a pair. "It was great, especially on our home floor to come out here one last time with everybody else," Snyderburn said. "It was all smiles. No negative mindsets, just come out here and have fun." With the Light Team building an insurmountable lead late, the teams took turns watching the high-flyers from each team perform in an informal slam dunk contest.
