Broad range of achievements in this year's Medina County Sports Hall of Fame class

MEDINA — The only county player to appear in an NBA game, an NCAA Division II Player of the Year and national champion in basketball and a two-time state wrestling champion highlight the 2026 Medina County Sports Hall of Fame induction class. Former Medina center Jon Teske, who appeared in three games with the Memphis Grizzlies, Wadsworth and Ashland University basketball star Jodi Johnson and Wadsworth and Cornell wrestling standout Noah Baughman will be joined by former Brunswick basketball player Pat Forsythe, who went on to play at West Virginia and Akron, and Blue Devils golfer Kelly Moskal, a high school state champ who played at Florida and Ohio State. The Al Thomas Award, given annually to a person who contributes to area sports in a non-playing or non-coaching manner, will go to longtime Wadsworth soccer and wrestling announcer Mike Kyner, while team recognition will go to the 2016 Division I state champion Wadsworth girls basketball team that included Johnson. Voting was done Thursday by members of The Gazette sports staff, county athletic directors and Medina Breakfast Kiwanis Club members. Official induction ceremonies will take place June 25 at the Galaxy Conference Center in Wadsworth, where first-team All-Gazette selections and coaches of the year in all sports also will be recognized. The 7-foot-1 Teske, a 2016 Medina graduate, was a first-team All-Ohio pick as a senior and two-time Gazette MVP in his career with the Bees, as well as a McDonald's All-American Game nominee. The four-year starter scored 1,130 points in his high school career. Teske went on to play four seasons at Michigan, helping the Wolverines reach the national championship game as a sophomore and win Big Ten championships his first two seasons. He finished his college career averaging 6.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 129 games, including 11.6, 6.7 and 1.8 in 31 games as a senior. After not being taken in the 2020 NBA Draft, Teske went on to play in the G League for the Lakeland Magic and appeared in three NBA games while on a 10-day contract with Memphis in January 2022, grabbing two rebounds with one assist and one steal. The 5-10 Johnson, a 2016 Wadsworth grad, finished her high school basketball career with 1,541 points in a county-record 112 games. A first-team All-Ohio pick and Ms. Basketball finalist as a senior, she was at her best in two regional games and two state tournament games, recording point totals of 25, 29, 24 and 28 as the Grizzlies beat Magnificat, Toledo Whitmer, Reynoldsburg and Mason to bring home a championship. Also a second-team All-Ohio and All-Gazette pick in volleyball at Wadsworth as well as Gazette Senior Female Athlete of the Year, Johnson helped the Ashland women's basketball team win the NCAA D-II women's college basketball championship as a freshman and was named national player of the year as a sophomore. The Eagles were undefeated in her senior year when the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the NCAA Tournament. Johnson, who declined offers to play professionally overseas, finished her Ashland career with 2,181 points, which ranked second in program history when her playing days ended in 2020, 771 rebounds, 464 assists (3rd) and 354 steals (3rd). Baughman, like Johnson a 2016 Wadsworth grad, won D-I state championships as a sophomore (106 pounds) and senior (120) and finished third as a junior. He was named Gazette MVP his final two seasons. Baughman went on to have an outstanding college career at Cornell, going 26-12 as a freshman, 22-9 as a sophomore, 2-3 in an injury-plagued junior year and 26-12 as a senior, when he was seeded 22nd at the national championships. The 6-11 Forsythe, a 2011 Brunswick graduate, made arguably the biggest one-season improvement in county history when he averaged 22.5 points on .650 shooting, 12.5 rebounds and an incredible 6.14 blocks as a senior, earning him first-team All-Ohio and Gazette MVP honors. As a junior, he averaged 4.9 points. Forsythe played at West Virginia as a college freshman, appearing in seven games and averaging 2.1 points and 3.4 rebounds while missing most of the season due to injury, with the NCAA granting him a medical redshirt. The big left-hander went on to play two seasons at Akron, averaging 3.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.8 blocks while appearing in 33 games in 2012-13 and 4.9, 3.3 and 1.0 in 34 games in 2013-14. He was the only player in the program to see action in every game over those two seasons. Forsythe also made 17 straight starts for the Zips in 2013-14 and shot a team-high .569 from the field. Moskal, a 1998 Brunswick grad who played on the boys golf team in the regular season because the Blue Devils did not yet have a girls squad, won a D-I girls state title in the fall of 1996, her junior year, en route to earning Gazette MVP. Also first-team All-Ohio as a sophomore, Moskal competed at the 1993 Junior Golf World Championships and played collegiately at Florida and Ohio State. She was a two-year starter for the Buckeyes, helping them win the Big Ten and finish eighth in the nation as a senior, as well as an Academic All-America choice as a junior and senior. Coached by Andrew Booth and led on the floor by Jodi Johnson, the 2015-16 state champion Grizzlies also featured Sophia Fortner, Lexi Lance, Laurel Palitto, Jenna Johnson, Jodi's twin, Maddie Movsesian, Olivia Chaney and sisters Peyton and McKenna Banks. Wadsworth, which ended the season with a 28-1 record, appeared to be in trouble in its state semifinal game against Reynoldsburg, but played a spectacular final eight minutes to win the fourth quarter 20-7 and record a 58-48 victory. The Grizzlies stayed hot in the championship game against Mason, playing outstanding in all phases while jumping to a 30-14 halftime lead. Mason rallied, but Wadsworth regrouped and won 60-51. Kyner, a 1976 Wadsworth grad who wrestled for the school, has been the full-time announcer for soccer games since the boys program started in 1979 and a girls team was added in 1986. On occasion, he has even announced road games when no PA person was available. Diligent about pronouncing all athletes' names correctly, Kyner is known for the halftime music he provides and soccer quizzes that earn the winner a prize. The 68-year-old Kyner also has announced numerous Wadsworth wrestling events, from dual matches to the Grizzly Invitational Tournament to postseason events.
