Medina's Anna Schork medals in four events at state gymnastics meet

HILLIARD — Medina senior Anna Schork saved her best for last with a tremendous performance at the state gymnastics meet Sunday. Schork tied for second place on the balance beam, finished fourth in the all-around and was fifth on the uneven parallel bars and floor exercise — establishing career highs in three events — in the 54th annual championship at Hilliard Bradley High. She is the first member of the Bees to earn medals in four events since Nicki Rymer in 2007 and the 13th gymnast in Medina County history to stand on the top-six podium at least four times at a single meet. "I feel very proud because my other three times at state, I've either been super nervous or psyched out, so it hasn't gone the way I wanted it to," Schork said. "Everything that happened in the past led up to this." The reigning Gazette MVP received her career-high scores in the all-around (37.35), floor (9.55) and beam (9.475). She opened the meet on the latter, winding up a mere .025 behind state champion Abby Pignatiello of Brecksville and tying Molly Francis of Magnificat. Schork then headed onto the floor — her favorite event — before soaring to a 9.275 on the vault. Though she didn't qualify for state on the vault, the mark was the second highest of her career. "That's the best vault she's ever done," Medina coach Darcy Ranallo said. "Anna came in with no expectations and just had a ball today. After her third event, she looked at me and said, 'Darce, I'm kind of in this (all-around title hunt).' I told her, 'Yeah, you are.'" Schork's day ended with a 9.05 on the bars, where making a huge save left Schork smiling as she completed her giant swings. Kenston's Sofia Macias (38.0), Wooster's McKinnley Hackett (37.825) and Solon's Samantha Singleton (37.8) were the only standouts to finish ahead of her in the all-around. She competed alongside Singleton and fifth-place Divine Reynolds of Marion Harding. "When you're around outstanding gymnasts, it's really inspiring," Schork said. "I couldn't have asked for better girls to rotate with. It was kind of a dream group at state." Highland senior Ally Gryskiewicz was also part of the rotation, tying for ninth place on the beam with a 9.15. The top 10 in each event are recognized as All-Ohio. Brunswick senior Delaney McKelvy received the honor, as well, by finishing ninth on the bars with an 8.9. It was both of their state debuts. "It was one of my best routines this season," Gryskiewicz said. "Other than a step on the landing, I felt very confident with the result. It was an exciting end to my high school career." Another state first-timer, Nevaeh Sejka of Buckeye, joined Schork in competing in multiple events. She finished 13th in the all-around and on the bars and tied for 23rd on the floor in the 36-athlete fields. Each of the county qualifiers earned four varsity letters and were at their absolute best this winter. "I was just so grateful to have made it to state and today was just icing on the cake for me," Sejka said.
