Boys basketball: Brunswick's Trey Drexler repeats as district player of the year

Trey Drexler is the second-leading scorer in Medina County history, repeated as Greater Cleveland Conference Player of the Year and powered the Brunswick boys basketball team to back-to-back conference championships for the first time. That and more made the 6-foot senior a two-time winner of Northeast Inland District Division I Player of the Year and also a repeat nominee for Ohio's Mr. Basketball award when the all-district teams were released Monday by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association. Drexler, an IU Indy recruit, averaged 26.5 points 2.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting .497 from the floor, .451 from 3-point range and .850 at the foul line this season. The left-hander finished his career with 1,754 points in 91 games, putting him 88 behind longtime leader Rob Wininger of Highland (1,842, 1989-93). Drexler, whose senior season ended prematurely due to a broken wrist, will be formally announced as one of the seven Mr. Basketball finalists later this week, and his honor was one of many for Medina County. Medina Christian point forward R.J. Walgate shared the boys D-VII Player of the Year honor with Columbiana Heartland Christian's Collin Kalaher, while Wadsworth forward Lauren Decker did so with Massillon Jackson's Maddie Lepley in D-I girls. Brunswick's Joe Mackey (D-I boys), Black River's Kyle Dack (D-V boys) and Wadsworth's Andrew Booth (D-I girls) captured coach of the year accolades. The 6-foot-7 Walgate averaged 18.5 points in the regular season for the Knights, who set an OHSAA school record with 15 victories and reached the district finals for the first time. Decker, meanwhile, put up 14.1 to lead the Grizzlies to the championship in a Suburban League National Conference that had five regional qualifiers and three regional finalists. Mackey piloted the Blue Devils to GCC and Northeast 3 District crowns. Dack helped the Pirates to their first winning season since 2009 and fourth since 1969, while Booth has Wadsworth in the state semifinals for the first time since 2018. Joining Drexler on the D-I first team was teammate Sean Barnett (6-5, sr., 17.6). SL American Conference Co-Player of the Year Joshua Butcher of Highland (6-4, sr., 17.8) earned the distinction in D-II and Cloverleaf combo guard Isaac Smith (5-10, jr., 21.5) was honored in D-IV. On the girls side, Highland point guard Grace Shondel (5-7, sr., 8.0) was a first-team choice in D-III and Cloverleaf point guard Evie Barth (5-8, sr., 18.8) got the accolade in D-IV. Second-team awards went to Brunswick's Adin Evert (6-4, jr., 10.1) and Adaya Collenette (5-4, jr., 15.3), Medina's Garrett Myers (6-6, sr., 13.5) and Abby Dress (5-9, sr., 11.5) and Wadsworth's Natalie Moser (5-9, jr. 7.8) and Natalie Maddox (5-8, so., 7.9) in D-I, Buckeye's Turner Dolata (6-5, sr., 17.6) and Highland's Madi Morgan (5-9, so., 10.9) in D-III, Black River's Parker Broadsword (6-1, so., 15.9) in D-V and Medina Christian's Sam Dorman (6-5, jr., 14.5) in D-VII.
