District gymnastics: Medina's Anna Schork, Buckeye's Nevaeh Sejka lead area state qualifiers

HUDSON — Medina senior Anna Schork completed her career grand slam and Buckeye senior Nevaeh Sejka cemented her place in school history Saturday. Both standouts are headed to the state gymnastics meet in seven combined events thanks to their terrific performances on the first day of the Hudson District. Schork finished third in the all-around and uneven parallel bars, sixth in the floor exercise and eighth on the balance beam. The 2025 All-Ohioan became just the fifth Medina County athlete in the last 27 years to advance to state in four consecutive seasons. "I've worked so hard all of my life for this sport, I wanted to see it show and pay off," reigning Gazette MVP Schork said. "Coming in today, I did kind of cut myself some slack because I had ankle surgery in the offseason and it's been a really rough year. "But more than anything, I wanted to prove that I still belonged. I'm happy to do that." Schork joins Medina's Emilie Rymer (2004-06) and Samantha Borrelli (2013-15), and Brunswick's Jordyn Thomas (2018-21) as local competitors who have advanced in four-or-more events three years in a row since 1999. Sejka placed fifth on the bars, sixth in the all-around and seventh with a spirited routine on the floor. She is the first Bucks qualifier since Sammy Theis in 2018 and their first to do so in multiple events since Brenna Miller punched her ticket in five exactly 20 years ago. The top 10 individuals in each event moved on from the three-session, 12-hour competition, earning their spots at the Ohio championship to be held at Hilliard Bradley this Sunday. "This is so surreal," a wide-eyed Sejka said. "It's definitely been a crazy path to get here, but each year made me stronger and led to this moment. "I wasn't sure how things were going to turn out, so I just enjoyed every second on the floor. It was our last event and I was the last to go, and I wanted to remember how it felt." Sejka had plenty of time to reflect as Buckeye competed in the afternoon session, then had to wait until the evening mini-meet was wrapped up. She was first on the floor and sat second on the bars, but could only watch and wait from the stands. With perennial state team champion Brecksville, Kenston, Solon, Medina and Wooster topping the loaded final session, it could have been agonizing to track scores, but Sejka relied on her faith and remained calm. "It actually wasn't that tough because I felt confident and was content with what I had done," she said. "I honestly wanted the best for every other girl and wasn't rooting against anyone. I felt so much support for everyone, I wanted to share the same energy." Brecksville, Kenston and Solon went 1-2-3, as expected, to claim the state berths in the 21-team field. Medina was a solid fourth, 2.375 behind the Comets, and Buckeye was fifth. Schork, senior Hailey Hofmann and sophomore Brianna DeBow counted scores in each event for the Bees, while Sejka, senior Miranda Pesto and freshman Kora Seeley did the same for the Bucks. "Solon had a great meet, so congratulations to them," Medina coach Darcy Ranallo said. "Our girls did very well and I was proud of them." Pesto led the vault going into the evening and came painfully close to her initial state bid, finishing 12th via a three-girl tiebreaker for the final spot at 9.05. Brecksville's Sasha Milanich and West Geauga's Ava Cavelli were awarded 10th and 11th, respectively, by the judges. "Today was about not getting in my head, letting everything else go and focusing on the moment," said Pesto, who is the second alternate in the event. Medina co-captain Hofmann also came close to advancing and was 14th on the bars, 15th on the floor and 16th in the all-around. As the only seniors on the squad, she and Schork were very emotional when the scores were announced. "Hailey has a lot to be proud of and I want to make sure she knows it," Schork said softly. "I'm really happy that we were able to have so many good moments together and compete side by side this year." Wadsworth, which was seeded 16th and only had four healthy athletes Saturday, opted for the morning session and finished 13th. Junior Ella Mattle led the floor going into the afternoon and ended up 26th, also posting the Grizzlies' high scores in the all-around, vault and bars.
