Commentary: Eyeing up the newest QB crop at the Combine; what could possibly go wrong?

As we all know, the biggest problem with the Browns is that the one thing they are absolutely the worst in the league at, and have been for the last quarter of a century — in this category no other NFL team is even remotely close to them — is the most important thing for every NFL team to have.That thing is a quarterback.History tells us that they could use two more quarterbacks, perhaps even three, given that they already have probably three or four more left over from last year's herd, which is a Browns tradition, given that Team Haslam is historically lacking when it comes to finding quality quarterbacks, so they traditionally have to buy bulk, i.e. Deshaun Watson.All of this takes place under the football big-top in Indianapolis, where, for one week every year, football is king, and the Browns are also there.Various NFL teams use the opportunity to examine, film, measure, time, interview and weigh the crop of college hopefuls hoping to impress officials of various teams in advance of the NFL Draft. It is sort of a football right of passage for both the athletes and team officials, each of whose goals are to impress the other.In the Browns' case, however, the NFL Combine, Browns style, has historically been a very sad, inconsistent and woeful story. Especially when it comes to scouting, weighing, measuring, etc., etc., prospective Browns draft picks, who could have made a difference, but didn't.Oh, if only all of us could have been there that day in 1957, when a young running back from Syracuse showed up to be timed, measured, weighed and wowed!Alas! The NFL Combine didn't exist then, but Jim Brown sure did.Oh, to be a fly on Paul Brown's cap 70 years ago, when the greatest running back ever put on a show of speed, strength, elusiveness and sheer history … merely during a workout that didn't exist.Unfortunately, there was no Combine then. There were no workouts. But there sure was a Jim Brown. One could only imagine what peak Jim Brown's Combine numbers would have been, if only there were Combine numbers. If only we could have seen them. Or seen him.Sigh!They didn't have domed stadiums in those days. They didn't have NFL Combines.But they did have Jim Brown.That was enough, because Jim Brown was more than enough, simultaneously, in two sports. They don't make Supermen like that anymore.What would Jim Brown's 40-time have been, anyway? How many linemen wouldn't have been able to match the muscle of Jim Brown, who was such a physical specimen that when he was at Syracuse playing football, he also played lacrosse, but with such ferociousness that lacrosse officials were forced to change the rules of the sport, because Brown was a one-man hurricane.There was no NFL Combine in 1957. But there was a rookie named Jim Brown.One can only imagine what Jim Brown's measurables would have looked like after he got loosened up during a lacrosse match, then went over to the Syracuse football stadium to wreak all kinds of havoc in demolishing yet another Syracuse football opponent.The great James Nathaniel Brown was as unstoppable as a soccer player as he was a football running back, who routinely demolished opposing defenses. One can only imagine what Number 32 must have looked like when he showed up on the football field after having terrorized lacrosse players earlier in the day. He was a one-man, two-sport wrecking crew, whose athleticism allowed him to play competitively in two sports on the same day.The change was necessary because to have been inside the Indianapolis Dome, which (minor detail!) didn't exist in 1957, when a running back from Syracuse showed up to be timed, measured, weighed and wowed. Who wouldn't have loved to have been at that imaginary NFL Combine? When this smashing Syracuse running back showed up a day or so later to put on another show for drooling NFL coaches dying to be timed, measured, weighed and wowed, and the jaws of NFL scouts and officials were frozen in time by some kid named Jim Brown.Fast forward to the current college combine crop. In case you hadn't heard, Browns officials, and all NFL team officials, are in Indianapolis this week to examine the meat on the hoof in this year's gridiron cattle call.The Browns, specifically, are expected to kick the tires, so to speak, on various position groups, with, one presumes, extra special attention directed toward the quarterback corral.That's where it always gets tricky for the Browns, whose track record for finding and developing quarterbacks would have to rally to be merely spotty.The two biggest things the Browns are the worst in the league at are the two biggest things: quarterback, and another quarterback.Other than that …The post Commentary: Eyeing up the newest QB crop at the Combine; what could possibly go wrong? first appeared on BrownsZone with Scott Petrak.
