Notes: Todd Monken on bringing his offense from Baltimore … 'you have to be what you believe in'

INDIANAPOLIS — Todd Monken is bringing his Ravens offense to the Browns.In his opinion: Why wouldn't he?The Ravens won 33 games in his three years as offensive coordinator and had the NFL's No. 1 scoring offense in 2023 and the No. 1 yardage offense in 2024.Analysis: Browns should sign Malik Willis and forget the open QB competition"How much are you really going to change? I mean, let's be real honest about it," the new Browns coach said Wednesday at the scouting combine.He cited Mike Macdonald, who was defensive coordinator of the Ravens before getting hired as Seahawks coach. He just won the Super Bowl in his second season."I'm sure they tweaked some things. And each year you're tweaking it," Monken said. "It's going to change, you're going to evolve, you're going to adapt and we're the same way, but what we do is what we do, how we call it, how we scheme it up can't change. You have to be what you believe in and how you attack people and how you prepare everything. That can't change."With the Ravens a division rival and having Monken's playbook, he will be forced to switch some things.Zone Coverage Podcast"They've got all our stuff. We're going to have to change some of it for God's sakes," he said. "I mean, we can't keep the same calls. But you are who you are. What you believe in is what you believe in."There's some things you're going to have to flip terminology-wise, but what you believe in, how you attack people, how you go about your daily routine, your coaching staff has got to stay the same. That's why you got the job. Completely flipped, then you're screwed. I don't know how you can do that. Anything in life, you have your belief system and then you go with it."OLD FRIENDSFormer Browns coach Kevin Stefanski was quickly hired as coach of the Falcons and hired several people he worked with in Cleveland.Defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg great fit for what Todd Monken wantedTommy Rees is the offensive coordinator and will call the plays. Alex Van Pelt will coach the quarterbacks and Bill Callahan the offensive line. Bob Quinn is Stefanski's senior adviser."Those are good coaches," Stefanski said. "I'm trying to hire the best coaches I can hire. Now, sometimes you're friends with those guys, but that's not a prerequisite. But there's a bunch of guys that are my friends that are also great coaches. I was very, very blessed, fortunate to add those guys to the roster."NEW GIGStefanski was a popular candidate in the coaching cycle, receiving several interviews."I had some frequent flyer miles is probably the easiest way to put it," he said. "It was fun. I enjoyed the process. I enjoyed getting to go into some other buildings and getting to sit down with people I really, really respect and trying to understand their building, their process, how they believe in team building and those type of things."He picked Atlanta before other teams could make an offer."So much of this is about fit for me," Stefanski said. "Fit for what I believe in. I felt very lucky to be able to talk to a bunch of other teams, but I felt like the fit was really strong."BIG FANThe Browns are in the market for a No. 2 tight end with David Njoku set to leave in free agency. Georgia's Oscar Delp would like to reunite with Monken, who was the Bulldogs' coordinator from 2020-22, and had a formal interview with the Browns."It was awesome," he said. "I chose Georgia and part of the reason was because of Coach Monken. I watched what he does with the tight ends and their offensive scheme is amazing."He's an awesome guy. Super down-to-earth coach. He's a guy who's going to coach you hard and that's what I want in a coach. The way he uses tight ends and how detailed he is in everything that he does, whether if it's alignments or plays and depths, it's unreal."Harold Fannin Jr., a third-round pick a year ago, established himself as the No. 1 tight end."I would love that," Delp said of joining Fannin. "Any team I'd love to be a part of, but to be able to play for Coach Monken again and all of the great coaches that he has on that staff would be amazing."TWO MORE YEARSThe Browns submitted a proposal to the NFL to allow teams to trade draft picks up to five years in the future, according to Pro Football Talk. The current limit is three years.Professional leagues have such rules to prevent bad owners from hurting franchises for years down the line.The Browns' proposal would require 24 votes to pass and have the bylaws amended. It will be discussed, with a possible vote, at the owners meetings in late March.BACKUP PLANIf Monken hadn't been hired by the Browns, he would've been coordinator for the Giants and coach John Harbaugh. He spent the last three years with Harbaugh in Baltimore, and Harbaugh tried to talk him out of taking the job with the Browns.Monken said he had started thinking about life with the Giants before the Browns picked him."Of course. I mean, I was hopeful that I would get the Cleveland Browns head coaching job.
