Brunswick to advertise for public bids for upcoming road projects including Maxwell Laurel roundabout

BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick Committee-of-the-Whole passed motions to advertise for public bids for road construction projects in the city, including for a roundabout at Maxwell Boulevard and Laurel Road, on Monday. The Maxwell Laurel Intersection Improvement Project intends to rehabilitate pavement between Pinewood Drive and Coventry Drive and install a roundabout at the intersection of Maxwell Boulevard and Laurel Road. There will be concrete base repairs and asphalt resurfacing on the pavement outside the roundabout, and new catch basins and storm sewers will be installed. "(Residents) need to be informed, not just about a roundabout, but about what's happening here because it's different than other generic intersections," Vice Mayor Nick Hanek said. "I hope we can do that because I have had residents concerned and contact me." City Engineer Jenny Zoldak said advertising for the project will happen around late February or March with construction likely starting in May. A company is in the process of relocating a utility. "They have a plan," she said. "That's the only potential hiccup that came up in the last couple weeks, but I don't see an impact to the schedule." The project has Ohio Public Works funding and a local share, Zoldak said. The preliminary cost estimate for construction is approximately $1.1 million, excluding contingencies, and the Ohio Public Works Commission grant is worth $720,000. "I'm really hoping what is a dangerous intersection will finally be improved," Hanek said. "It is a nasty site with issues at that intersection." Committee-of-the-Whole also authorized advertising for public bid for the 2026 asphalt program. The program aims to rehabilitate, repair and resurface neighborhood streets in Ward 3 and Ward 4, and the preliminary cost estimate is not to exceed $1.6 million. Cherry Lane, Westchester Drive, Landon Lane and Claridge Oval are existing concrete streets that will have base repairs and an asphalt overlay, Zoldak said. Gary Lane, Starview Drive and Venus Drive are existing asphalt streets that will be resurfaced. "With the latter two streets, Venus Drive and Starview Drive, those will be getting a double chip seal with the mastic seal, so it's not a full three-inch resurfacing due to the low traffic volumes on those streets," Zoldak said. "We did a similar treatment on the other portion of Starview (Drive), and it held up very well. We'll do that same treatment, which allows us to do additional streets elsewhere." Crestway Oval is a concrete street that will be bid as an alternate for the project, according to Zoldak. The city will look at how the bid pricing comes in to see if it can be included as well. "It's in case the bids come in higher than last year since we aren't exactly sure how the asphalt prices will come in," she said. "We're going to do it as an alternate, just in case, but we're hoping that we can fit all of that under the $1.6 million." The 2026 asphalt program will be advertised in February or March, with construction anticipated to begin in May. The city has a separate project to do concrete street repairs in Ward 1 and Ward 2, and that project will go out to bid in late March or April.
