Two Brunswick Police sergeants retire and two new sergeants sworn in

BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick Division of police said goodbye to two sergeants due to retirement and welcomed in two new sergeants during a Brunswick City Council meeting Monday. Jeffrey Holub and Jeremy Puhac were sworn-in as sergeants by Mayor Ron Falconi on Monday. Police Chief Robert Safran said Holub began his career in Brunswick in 2018 and has been a member of the detective bureau, bike patrol and has been a field training officer. "He was always someone that mentored younger officers, and that's going to be a great quality for a sergeant," Safran said. "When officers were done in field training, he would frequently sit with them in the roll call room and give them extra advice. They were on their own, but they weren't really on their own, and Jeff (Holub) really fostered that part of the officer's career." Puhac has 25-years of experience and has been a field training officer, a crime scene technician and a mentor for younger officers, Safran said. He is also involved with Shop with a Cop and a peer counseling service. "Jeremy (Puhac) blossomed in that role," he said. "Basically, it's a peer counseling service for officers and dispatchers. He's done an amazing job with that." Sgt. Michael Matheis and Sgt. Jonathan Page were both recognized for their years of service to the department through proclamations from Falconi. Matheis served on the Brunswick Division of Police for more than 32 years. He began his career with the department in 1994 as a police officer, became a sergeant in 2002 and is set to retire on April 8. He thanked all the officers and dispatchers he worked with throughout his career. "I know a lot of the younger guys only know me as the traffic guy, but for 25 years, I worked as a patrolman and then a road sergeant," he said. "You're working weekends, nights, holidays, and I just want to thank my family for putting up with that because that's tough for those 25 years." Page has been a member of the Brunswick Division of police for nearly 28 years. He started off as a police officer in 1998 and was promoted to sergeant in 2004. His retirement will be on May 2. "(I want to) thank the citizens of Brunswick for letting me protect you for the last 28 years," he said. "It's been an honor."
