Jarrett Allen's scores career-high 40 points in Cavaliers' win at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — Jarrett Allen scored a career-high 40 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as the Cavaliers handed the Portland Trail Blazers their fifth straight loss with a 130-111 victory Sunday night. Sam Merrill added 22 points, including six 3-pointers, and the Cavs rebounded from a loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night that snapped a five-game winning streak. Allen also contributed five assists and four blocks. Caleb Love had 21 points for the Blazers, who struggled without top scorer Deni Avdija. He missed the game with a lower back strain. Portland trailed by 24 but closed the gap in the final quarter, pulling to 106-96 with 7:32 left. The Cavaliers went up 118-104 on Merrill's 3-pointer with 4:15 remaining, and fans streamed toward the exits. With the trade deadline approaching, Portland acquired forward Vit Krejci from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for injured center Duop Reath and a pair of draft picks. The Cavaliers jumped to an early 11-point lead, but Love's 3-pointer pulled Portland to 43-41 with just more than five minutes left in the first half. The Cavs led 57-48 at the break. Dean Wade hit back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch Cleveland's lead to 66-52 in the third quarter. Blazers guard Blake Wesley played for first time since October after recovering from foot surgery, entering the game in the opening quarter. Mitchell makes All-Star team For the seventh consecutive season, Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell has been selected to the NBA's All-Star team. He was named a reserve on Sunday for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles. It was his fourth consecutive nod since being traded to Cleveland in 2023. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Mitchell joins LeBron James (10 times), Brad Daugherty (five times), Mark Price (four times) and Kyrie Irving (four times) as the only players in Cavs' history to earn four or more NBA All-Star selections while playing for the Wine and Gold. The seven reserves for each conference were chosen by NBA head coaches. The 75th NBA All-Star Game will tip off Sunday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. at Intuit Dome. Mitchell is averaging a career-high 29.1 points per game (sixth in the NBA), 4.7 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.46 steals (16th in the NBA). He's shooting a career-high-tying .484 from the field, .383 from the 3-point arc and .842 from the foul line. The University of Louisville standout has scored 20 or more points in 37 games, including 25 games of 30 or more points (tied for first in the Eastern Conference) and 40 points or more points on five occasions (tied for first in the East). The 29-year-old owns a plus/minus of +248 (14th-best in NBA). Mitchell is first in the East with 173 3-point goals. He's averaging a career-high 3.8 3-pointers. No player in the NBA is averaging more second-half points than Mitchell's 17. The 2026 NBA All-Star Game will feature a new format, with two teams of U.S. players and one team of international players (known as the World team) competing in a round-robin tournament of four 12-minute games. Each team will include at least eight players, with full rosters to be announced at a later date.
