Girls wrestling: Berkeley Craddock takes title for host Cloverleaf

WESTFIELD TWP. — The Cloverleaf girls wrestling team may have been short four wrestlers Sunday at the Lorain County Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Tournament, but it was still able to secure a fourth-place finish. The biggest missing name was sophomore 110-pounder Natalie Wise, who was a state qualifier a season ago, but the Colts put on strong performances. All four Cloverleaf wrestlers placed in the top three of their weight classes, with Berkeley Craddock picking up the win at 125 and Aubrey Willig (140) and Amelia Ryncarz (145) taking second. "It was a great day," Craddock said. "We had a lot of energy. Our whole team is very excited to see the tournament grow every year, so it was great going out there with confidence and wrestling good matches, wrestling my matches." Craddock won her first four matches via pin, including two in less than a minute, before upsetting top-seeded Claire Ondrejko of Columbia with a 15-8 decision. "I love that the tournament is growing, and it's really great to be the head of my bracket and get that win," Craddock said. The performance continued what has been a strong season for Cloverleaf. "We put a lot of effort in, both inside and outside the wrestling room," Craddock said. "We have a great team dynamic, which definitely helps when it comes to wrestling as a team. We definitely had a smaller team today, with a lot of people out injured or sick, but we did very well for our team." Black River had just two wrestlers, junior Taylor Owen (1st, 155) and sophomore Hailey Grant (3rd, 105). Owen dominated all five of her matches, winning the first four via pin in under two minutes before finishing with a 16-1 technical fall over Columbia's Cailyn Demagall. "I was just focused on wrestling my hardest," Owen said. "No nerves. No fear. Today, I was just focused on getting after it, pinning my way through and trying to get the win." After finishing fifth at the state tournament two years ago and seventh last winter, Owen is hoping to better those marks. "It's an awesome feeling," she said. "It gives me a lot of confidence to be prepared for states. I'm feeling really prepared and really focused on getting after it and dominating my way through."
