Construction of new Brunswick High School continues through winter

BRUNSWICK — Crews are continuing to build the new Brunswick High School through the winter months in anticipation of the building opening for the 2027-28 school year. The high school is split into seven sections for construction. Sections one through three are academic, four and five are athletic, six is the auditorium and seven has the primary mechanical and kitchen spaces. According to an update from Brunswick Schools, the construction team was able to continue to work on the exterior of the building because of the relatively dry weather. Concrete was also recently poured for the second floor of section one of the building using a "tenting strategy." "(Crews) enclosed the first floor, heating the slab deck from below to ensure the concrete would cure properly," the district stated. "On pour days, dedicated crews arrived early in the morning to brush off snow and prep the surface, ensuring concrete trucks were pouring several hours later. This push allowed the team to secure the structural concrete while conditions were favorable." Construction will focus on steel erection in section three, masonry in sections two and seven and finishing the foundation of section six. Crews will work on steel erection when the weather is colder and shift back to masonry when temperatures go up, since masonry requires certain weather conditions. "The building came out of the ground so fast, and it's really taking shape," Superintendent Jason Niedermeyer said. "We're going to get to a point where it's going to look like progress has stopped, but what people won't see is that we're under roof and a lot of what needs to happen inside the building will be taking place." Section five of the building is now under roof and enclosed, which allows crews to be unaffected by weather. As a result, mechanical and plumbing teams are in the area to put in building systems. "We're in a great position because we can do steel construction on the outside while sections of the building are under roof, and they can be working on the inside of the building simultaneously," Niedermeyer said. "We're in a really good spot. The weather was very helpful to us." The $102 million construction project, which involves building a new Brunswick High School, maintenance facility, board of education and making elementary classroom additions, is funded by state funding and a bond issue that passed in May 2023.
