Diamond Event Center to expand business model under new ownership

BRUNSWICK — The Diamond Event Center, a longtime Brunswick event venue and catering company, is expected to keep its same traditions while adding more offerings under new ownership. Tariq Islam is part of the new ownership group, which is working toward a grand reopening in January. He said Kevin Schemrich operated the venue for more than 20 years and recently sold the business for personal reasons. "(The ownership group has) four people with four different skill sets," Islam said. "We are planning to generate revenue for the city and be a great place where anyone can come and enjoy food and have a good time." The Diamond Event Center, at 1480 Pearl Road, will still have two halls available to host events, Islam said. A room at the back end of the building will be converted to a dine-in restaurant serving both American and Indian dishes. "Just because we are taking it over does not mean anything is changing," he said. "We are adding more things, so that will be exciting for the Brunswick community. Under one roof, they can have both cuisines of fine American food and also Indian food." The restaurant will be open for walk-in guests, and the company intends to be on food delivery service apps. Islam said the company wants to give teachers, firefighters and police officers who work in Brunswick a discount when they come to the restaurant. "We need to appreciate our teachers, our firefighters, our policemen and our people who are serving the community," he said. "Without them, I think we cannot have a good community. We want to appreciate them." Islam said historically the Diamond Event Center has been a good business that has served the entire Brunswick community, and he does not plan on changing that. "They should feel like this is part of their community," he said. "It's the place where they can come have a wedding, a graduation party, anything they want and, at the same time, enjoy good food."
