Girls basketball: Adaya Collenette, Bri Sigmund lead Brunswick to win

BEREA — Adaya Collenette provided the early offense for the Brunswick girls basketball team at the Berea-Midpark Holiday Hoops Showcase. Bri Sigmund later made sure the Blue Devils walked out of the gym with a victory. Collenette scored 18 of her 24 points in the first half and Sigmund collected a season-high 15 points and a career-best six steals, lifting Brunswick to a 57-45 win over Louisville on Tuesday afternoon. "(Sigmund) has grown tremendously and she wants to put in the work to keep improving," Blue Devils coach Angela Fink said. "We know she has one of the toughest jobs, guarding the best player on the other team every game, but she doesn't just want to be known as a defensive threat. Seeing her offense come through today should give her a lot of confidence." Sigmund buried two of her career-high-tying five 3-pointers early in the third quarter to give Brunswick (5-5) its largest lead at 38-16. The 5-foot-3 junior had three total treys in the first nine games. The Leopards (4-8) immediately answered with a 20-3 run to pull within 41-36 in the fourth, fueled by seven points from lead guard Maggie Baker. Sigmund promptly quelled the threat. A small forward by necessity, Sigmund made two steals as Louisville was held scoreless for the next three minutes before delivering the dagger with 2:11 left on a 3-pointer to push the spread to 49-36. "It felt great," Sigmund said of her offensive outburst. "I've been in a little slump shooting lately, so I'm glad I could help the team out. "I'm really proud of the way we got this win. It was a great team effort." Point guard Collenette also had six rebounds and four steals, while center Amya Fluellen had five boards and three thefts. Power forward Aubrey Hayes chipped in eight points and three assists. Cam Sheets added five points and a steal off the bench, making Brunswick's only shot during its eight-minute swoon in the second half. The Blue Devils had 15 steals on Louisville's 19 turnovers. "Our goal is to make the other team uncomfortable with the ball, speed them up, and force turnovers," Collenette said. "The steals have just come naturally." Baker finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists before fouling out. Ella Tillett had 13 points and seven rebounds and Mikayla Salmons posted nine points and eight rebounds for the considerably taller Leopards. Sigmund was giving up six inches in most one-on-one situations, but didn't back down. "It's not my favorite thing, but I've got a big heart," she said with a laugh. Brunswick, which never trailed, drained 11 3-pointers and shot 92.3% from the foul line (12-of-13). Sigmund was 5-of-6 beyond the arc and Collenette made 8-of-9 free throws. With backup guard Olivia Moats sidelined for several weeks with a left ankle sprain, Sheets and Vanity Kersey combined to outscore the Leopards' reserves 5-0 and outrebound them 4-1. Louisville, one of the few independent public schools in Ohio, dropped its third straight after a three-game winning streak. It will join the Youngstown-based All-American Conference next year.
