Kevin Stefanski 'not worried' about sideline argument as Shedeur Sanders, Jerry Jeudy struggle to build chemistry

Shedeur Sanders and Jerry Jeudy not being on the same page was clear from the game film and the statistics. Jeudy has five catches in 11 targets for 75 yards and no touchdowns in 2½ games with Sanders at quarterback.The sideline argument Sunday in the 26-8 loss to the 49ers made their issues impossible to ignore.After another failed second-half series, Jeudy and Sanders were shown on the CBS broadcast in a heated exchange on the bench. They were looking at a tablet on which they review plays and Jeudy clapped his hands several times and said "that's wrong, that's wrong" before center Ethan Pocic intervened.Shedeur Sanders suffers first loss as starter, says he needs to be better and rally team when adversity hits"Football is an emotional sport, and certainly when you're a family like we are, you can have your disagreements," coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday. "Sometimes they're for everybody to see. Sometimes it's behind closed doors. But like a family, we move on, we talk about it, so not worried about it."Jeudy didn't talk to reporters after the game, and Sanders wasn't asked about the dustup. He did talk about trying to build chemistry with Jeudy and the rest of the receivers after not getting practice repetitions with the first-team offense until taking over the starting role two weeks ago.He'll get start No. 3 next Sunday against the Titans. "It was a comfort level. As players and as teammates, we have to be able to jell with each other and be comfortable with each other in every situation. That takes time. It takes a lot of things."So this team is not going to be a microwave thing. We're going to have sparks. We're going to have here and there, but it's going to take time to be able to develop that chemistry with everybody. To be on the same page with Jerry."Jeudy's season has been a huge disappointment for him and the team. He made his first Pro Bowl a year ago in his first season with the Browns, catching 90 passes for 1,229 yards and four touchdowns.He's been unable to get in sync with any of the starting quarterbacks this season — Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Sanders — and has struggled with drops. He has 35 catches in 80 targets for 421 yards and a touchdown.Jeudy's aggravation was noticeable the last couple of games after Sanders missed him with a pass or didn't throw his way when he was open. On third down on Cleveland's opening drive Sunday, Jeudy was open early on an in route but Sanders didn't throw it. Jeudy turned upfield and got free behind the defense, and Sanders overthrew him.Commentary: Shedeur Sanders needs time to develop … unfortunately, Browns do tooStefanski said teammates looking at a route or coverage differently is natural and can lead to passionate disagreements."That's nothing new in football," he said. "You have plays that you see things and you want to talk through it, but those come up every single game, truly. And sometimes it can be two offensive linemen who saw a play a little bit differently and you got to look at the tape and get on the same page. So that's all it is."Sanders has talked about being at a disadvantage because he didn't work with the starting offense sooner. He's trying to make up for lost time but wants to know every detail of how his teammates play, especially as route runners."I'm more of a trust person," he said. "So we have to spend time on task, with all those guys, and be able to trust and be able to see things out the same lens. A lot of time out there, I would say passing-wise, we're not seeing everything out the same lens or certain guys aren't in the same spot that we seen and we practiced. Spot, I'm saying, who lined up where. If you're on this side, you're on this side. We just got to be comfortable and just make everything consistent."The Browns have several young pieces at the skill positions, which leads to growing pains. Tight end Harold Fannin Jr., running backs Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson and receivers Isaiah Bond and Gage Larvadain are rookies, receivers Malachi Corley and Jamari Thrash are in their second year and receiver Cedric Tillman in his third.Given Sanders' inexperience in the NFL, the Browns are trying to speed up the chemistry clock with practice time, meetings and film sessions."It's all of the above," Stefanski said. "It's definitely being on the same page as an offense, and that comes in meetings and walkthroughs and understanding concepts and what we're trying to do and those types of things."And then time on task on the football field and practice and routes versus air and games. I think all of that adds up."After the game Sanders said he "failed" the team and needed to be better rallying everyone during adversity. His teammates said that's not a problem."I say he's been great," Fannin said. "I feel like in those huddles he's very good with the situation that we're in and helping us talk us through it and really just motivating us to go out there and put something together.""Shedeur's a great guy," Judkins said. "He's a great quarterback. He always handles things well. He's really good at what he does. Everybody in the room believes in him. Everybody on his team believes in him, so he'll continue to go out there and perform the way he does."He handles all these situations the right way, continuing to show the guys around him his leadership, not only by his words but by his actions. So I'm proud of him and how he handles everything."Stefanski believes Sanders will build on the outing vs. the 49ers."Shedeur had some really good moments in that football game. There are things that he wants back that we're coaching up right now that he can improve upon," he said. "But bottom line is we have to continue to put our players in position to succeed. For the young quarterback, you only get better with more turns at this thing in these games, as you see more coverages, as you see more defenses and as you prepare versus different defenses. So just looking forward to that constant improvement with Shedeur and for all of our young players."I'm pleased with his progress.
