High school soccer: Seven county players make All-Ohio teams

WESTFIELD TWP. — Seven proved to be a lucky number for Medina County players when the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association revealed its All-Ohio teams. Medina goalie Bennett Werthmuller and Brunswick midfielder Owen Beskid earned boys Division I recognition, while Wadsworth forward Justin Lazzaretti and Cloverleaf forward Isaiah Kurtz were honored in D-II and D-III, respectively. On the girls side, Medina forward Emma McTigue took home All-Ohio honors in D-I, while Highland midfielder Vanessa Zufall repeated in D-II and Buckeye defender Julia King earned D-III accolades. Additionally, Medina's Doug Coreno was named D-I boys coach of the year after leading the Bees to Greater Cleveland Conference and district championships. Highland's Justin Nolan earned D-III girls assistant coach of the year for helping guide the Hornets to a third straight district title. Lazzaretti tied Grizzlies records for goals in a game (4) and season (26) while finishing second in the county in goals and tied for third in points (55) with Kurtz, who had 22 goals and 11 assists. Beskid led the Blue Devils with 26 points on seven goals and 12 assists. Werthmuller led Medina to a county-best 10 shutouts in 19 games as the Bees averaged 0.8 goals allowed per game. McTigue led the Bees to GCC and district championships with 19 goals and three assists, finishing fourth in the county with 41 points. Zufall led the county with 25 assists and finished second with 53 points. King led Buckeye to its first district title, captaining a back line that allowed 16 goals in 19 games, including nine shutouts and seven more games of allowing only one goal.
