College notes: Local women distinguishing themselves on the pitch

Former Medina County girls soccer players had quite the couple of weeks on the college pitch, with two scoring their first career college goals, another getting her first point and yet another getting her first point with her new program in her second year there. University of Akron junior Jo Oberhaus (Highland) scored the first three goals of her career in back-to-back games. Her first goal came in a 2-1 loss to Kent State, then she found the net twice in a 4-3 win over Central Michigan, including the game-winner with less than seven minutes left. Northwestern State redshirt freshman Marissa Henderson (Medina) scored her first goal in a 3-1 win over East Texas A&M. It came on her first shot on goal of the season. Edinboro freshman Grace Madison (Highland) got her first college point with an assist in a 2-1 win over Clarion. It came on the game-winning goal in the final minute. Senior Riley Kerber (Medina) got her first point for Dayton on an assist in a 4-1 win over St. Joseph's. She played two seasons at Boston College before transferring to Dayton prior to last season. Football Redshirt junior Jajuan Johnson (Medina) had season highs with six tackles and 79 yards on kick returns for Walsh University in a loss to Tiffin. Senior Matt Spatny (Medina) had a season-high six tackles for Lehigh in a 31-7 win over Columbia, including five solos. Sophomore wide receiver Will Stack scored his first two career touchdowns for Case Western Reserve in a 42-14 win over St. Vincent. The first came on a 20-yard pass reception early in the second quarter and the second came on a 21-yard run with 2:57 left in the first half. Men's cross country Junior Dillon Hach (Medina) was the top runner for Baldwin Wallace at the Louisville Cross Country Classic, finishing in 12th place in 25:22.8. Women's volleyball Sophomore Nicole Colombo (Brunswick) had a career-high 14 digs for Lake Erie College in a win over Ursuline. Sophomore Bella DeBarr (Brunswick) had her best match of the season in a loss to Ohio Dominican, leading Wheeling in kills (15) and digs (17). Junior Makenzie Schellenberger (Medina) had a season-high 15 digs in a loss to Marietta. It was the sixth time this season she has reached double-digit digs in a match. Sophomore Alayna Tessena (Highland) had double-digit kills in three straight matches for Northern Colorado, with 11 in a loss to Montana State, 14 in a win over Sacramento State and 13 in a win over Portland State. She leads the Bears with 236 kills through 18 matches. Junior Ellie Zuro-Cirino (Wadsworth) tied her season high with 22 kills in a win over Edinboro. She leads the Mountain Cats with 250 kills through 17 matches. Women's golf Sophomore Isabella Goyette (Highland) finished ninth for Kent State at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational with a score of 7 over for three rounds. She shot 2 under in the final round to jump nine spots. Senior Ari Kaiser (Wadsworth) finished third at the Arcadia Golden Oaks Shootout with a 12-over 156 (77-79) to help California-Pennsylvania to a third-place finish as a team. Women's soccer Sophomore Brooke Allen (Brunswick) scored her third goal of the season for Wisconsin in a 3-0 win over Minnesota. Junior Ella Dinwiddie (Wadsworth) scored her fourth goal of the season for Mount Union in a 3-1 loss to Wilmington. She also had her first assist in a 2-1 loss to Otterbein. Sophomore Anna Fugarino (Medina) had a goal for North Alabama in a 3-1 loss to Lipscomb. It was her second of the season. She also had her first assist of the year in a 2-1 win over Austin Peay. Freshman Caroline Schork (Medina) scored a goal for Dayton in a 4-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth. It was her second of the season. Junior Olivia Sipsock (Medina) scored a goal for Eastern Michigan in a 1-1 draw against Bowling Green. It was her fourth of the season. Men's soccer Junior Nate Werthmuller (Medina) assisted on both goals for Malone in a 2-0 win over Walsh. Theey were the first assists of the season for Werthmuller. Women's tennis Senior Gillian Brown (Brunswick resident) took home victories in singles and doubles as Baldwin Wallace defeated Clarion (Pa.) 6-1. Contact Ryan Isley at sports@medina-gazette.com.
