Girls soccer: Medina beats GlenOak in battle of unbeatens

MEDINA — Entering play Saturday, only two Division I girls soccer teams remained undefeated. Now there is just one: Medina. The Bees took care of business, dominating GlenOak in every aspect and moving to 11-0-2 on the season with a 5-0 non-league win. With Perrysburg (10-1-1) falling 5-2 to Upper Arlington, the Bees are now the only D-I team in Ohio without a loss. The thorough goal line-to-goal line control of the Golden Eagles (7-6-1) also had a little bit of a revenge factor, as GlenOak ended Medina's 2024 season 1-0 in the district finals. "Coming into this — we were freshman, so we didn't play last year — it was that they beat us, and we lost our spot in the tournament," said the Bees' Emma McTigue, who had two goals and an assist. "We wanted to go out hard and aggressive, knock them down and show them who was the boss." From the opening kickoff, it was clear that Medina wanted to make a statement. The relentless offensive push and total defensive effort that flowed back through goalkeepers Brianna McCashin and Ashleigh Walburn overwhelmed GlenOak. "It was a lot of mental," Medina midfielder Annaliese Ebert said. "We always keep each other up and if you need to drop back or you need a breather someone will be there to help you out." McCashin easily gobbled up GlenOak's only shot on goal, and Walburn finished the final 10 minutes for Medina's third straight shutout and eighth of the season. "As a senior, I know we have to take advantage of our time while we have it," said Maggie Wolny, who scored Medina's final goal. "We have to take our moments, and especially on nights like this at home we have to take advantage." Since falling behind 2-0 against Magnificat at halftime, the Bees have outscored opponents 24-1, including two second-half goals to tie the Blue Streaks. Medina played angry and determined against GlenOak with eight shots on goal, which was a low total considering the Bees had far more chances and the Golden Eagles were on their heels for all 80 minutes. Olivia Saksa and Sophia Lazar added goals for the Bees, while Sydney Atkinson and Ella Wilgor each had an assist. Medina last went unbeaten in the regular season in 2018. That squad went 14-0-2 and advanced to the regional semifinals before falling 2-0 to Twinsburg. To accomplish the feat, the Bees still have Greater Cleveland Conference rivalry games against Brunswick (Tuesday) and Strongsville (Oct. 15) sandwiched around a non-league tilt with Massillon Jackson.
