Hinckley trustee, Highland School Board candidates answer questions during women's club forum

HINCKLEY TWP. — Hinckley trustee and Highland school board candidates answered community questions and shared why they are running in the upcoming general election during a candidate night event held by Hinckley Women's Club on Thursday. There are four candidates running for two seats on the Hinckley board of trustees. Incumbent Monique Marzullo-Ascherl said she promised increased transparency and communication, which has been delivered through an increased township presence online and in print. She feels safety services have also been strengthened over the past few years. "These efforts ensure that residents' voices are heard, needs are being met and services are improved," she said. "My approach has always been simple: Keep communication open, listen to residents and follow through." Russ Paintiff said he is very familiar with finances based on his experience in business. He advocated for controlling development in the township, so Hinckley maintains its current character, and he wants to look into new types of zoning. "I'm passionate about living where I live," he said. "I'm passionate about my job. You can ask anybody that knows me. I'm honest. I'm truthful, and I am not going to jeopardize my integrity for anybody." Tom Schrader said he feels it is important for public officials to keep an open mind and do what is best for the most people. He would also like the township to be more accessible to the public by varying meeting times and having regular open houses. "I've had specific negotiation training, both for individuals and for groups," he said. "I think that's important as we interact with the citizens, other townships and other communities. I think that we can negotiate and reach good outcomes for all the stakeholders." Incumbent Jack Swedyk said he uses the skills he learned through his nearly 40 years of experience as an operations manager at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport when performing the duties of a trustee. He said the current board of trustees has focused on fostering welcoming dialogue with residents. "The levels of transparency this board has instituted allows residents to be better informed, especially with the ability to view trustee meetings online," he said. "The board continually takes calls and answers emails from residents. Addressing questions and concerns from people will always be the highest priority." This year, four candidates are running for three seats on the Highland board of education. B. Scott Quade said he was a teacher for 37 years before he retired three years ago, and his time as a teacher is the basis of his platform. He believes the district is already doing a great job, but he has concerns about potential funding cuts from the state. "I've been a longtime advocate for public education," he said. "The solution to the funding issue, I think, needs to come from Columbus. Regarding funding and property taxes, I'm also a senior on a fixed income, so I know what that feels like, and I know it's a challenge." John Ross said he wanted to use his experience as a business owner for fiscal responsibility. His goal and vision are to make sure Highland students have access to more opportunities in school. "They all have different goals, and Highland has every opportunity to afford them to do whatever they want, until they graduate," he said. "We need to continue with that. I feel like my experience in the business arena and also my experience with fundraisers, volunteering with Highland and being deep-rooted in Highland helps with that." Incumbent Melissa Schreiner said she has a well-rounded perspective as a Highland student, alumni, parent and volunteer, which allows her to understand the needs of students, family and staff. If reelected, she said she will continue to listen with empathy, communicate with transparency and represent the district with integrity. "I'm deeply invested in Highland's future, and my goal is to ensure our school continues to provide excellent educational opportunities while adapting and growing to meet the changing needs of our community," she said. Incumbent Christopher Wolny said he is driven by passion. He believes the state needs to "stand up" regarding funding and said the board of education will work to deliver the best for the community and for students. "My desire and my goals for the future is to continue to foster relationships, hear the desires of each family, work with the community and continue to provide the best education to all of our students," he said.
