Shedeur Sanders tells ESPN Cleveland he's ready to play, 'capable of doing better' than some NFL starters

BEREA — Shedeur Sanders is as confident as ever.Despite being No. 3 on the depth chart, the rookie quarterback believes he's better than some starters across the league."I know if you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I'm capable of doing better than that," Sanders told ESPN Cleveland on Thursday.Lions OC John Morton says Browns' No. 1 run defense hasn't seen 'run game like ours yet'Joe Flacco, 40, remains the starter despite the offense averaging 15.3 points a game, which ranks 30th in the NFL. Rookie Dillon Gabriel is the top backup, and some fans have called for him to replace Flacco."I don't think playing or not playing is in my hands," Sanders said when asked if he felt he was close to playing. "Based on the situation, if things happen, if things pan out where I play, then I'll be out there and I'll be ready to play. I'm ready to play right now."Sanders had been a starter throughout his career before being drafted in the fifth round. He told the Ravens and Eagles not to draft him because he didn't want to sit behind established starters.He had a strong preseason debut, then struggled in his second outing. "It's obvious a lot of teams would be playing me, but that's not in God's plan right now. And some things happen for a reason and I'm a true believer in that. It's just funny to me and I just enjoy it."Deion Sanders, Shedeur's Hall of Fame father and coach at Colorado, told the Kelce brothers on the "New Heights" show that his advice to Shedeur is to stay ready. He added he believes Shedeur's time is "coming up.""I focus on each and every day and what I've got to do," Shedeur told ESPN Cleveland. "Just because of where I am on the depth chart, don't let that dictate my mindset each and every day because you don't know what could happen. It's just keeping the mindset of staying locked in and remaining focused on the main thing."Zone Coverage PodcastSanders, Gabriel and practice squader Bailey Zappe have taken turns running the scout team. The coaches also have extra periods for the young players to get practice reps."Overall I feel like I'm doing great, I'm doing what I need to do each and every day," Sanders said. "Remaining focused, remaining mind on the complete mission, not really get comfortable. I'm not comfortable being a scout team player."Honestly, that's my situation, I'm going to make the best of it and enjoy my moments. But overall this isn't my end goal.
