Browns 13, Packers 10: Andre Szmyt hits winning 55-yard FG to cap crazy comeback

CLEVELAND — Andre Szmyt was supported by teammates after a summer tragedy and disastrous debut.He was mobbed by them Sunday at midfield after drilling the winning 55-yard field goal as time expired. The kicker then ran down to the Dawg Pound, which celebrated its 40th anniversary on alumni day, and jumped backward into the stands.The Browns didn't score for more than 56 minutes. Their only touchdown drive was 4 yards. The offense was booed repeatedly by the home crowd.Commentary: Just a typical wacky Browns win … courtesy of an Andre Szmyt 55-yard field goalThe end erased all the negativity as the Browns rallied to beat the Green Bay Packers 13-10 at Huntington Bank Field.Grant Delpit got the defense's first takeaway of the season with an interception that set up Quinshon Judkins' first career touchdown, a 1-yarder with 3:01 left. Shelby Harris blocked what would've been the go-ahead field goal with 27 seconds left. Joe Flacco completed an 8-yard pass to tight end David Njoku and was able to spike the ball to stop the clock with two seconds left.Szmyt's kick, which was good by plenty, was the best of all the big plays."I'm really proud of that young man," coach Kevin Stefanski said. "I'm happy for that young man. He's been through a lot, and he came through."Defense plays great again, gets elusive takeaway on way to upset winSzmyt's mom, Lala, died July 10 of a brain aneurysm."It's good to come through and I know she's there. She's there with me and giving me strength and support," said Szmyt, who missed two kicks in the 17-16 opening loss to the Bengals. "And I make these kicks, the first thing I think about is her and how she'd love to be here. And obviously I do it for her as well. She was my biggest fan."The Browns stared a shutout in the face. They wound up stunning the Packers.Cleveland rallied with 13 points in the last 3:38 to pull off the upset. The Browns are 1-2, the Packers 2-1.Stefanski made playing complementary football the theme of the week. Cleveland sacked Jordan Love five times and intercepted him once, and held Josh Jacobs to 30 yards rushing and a 1.9 average while ending his 11-game touchdown streak. The Packers totaled 230 yards."Our defense is playing at a high level," Stefanski said. "And what I love about our defense is how we play as much as what we do and, the schemes we play. Just watch us play, watch our guys come off the ball, watch them run to the ball, watch them celebrate with each other. That's an infectious group over there."Judkins (18 carries, 94 yards) started the comeback with back-to-back runs of 14 and 28 yards to the Packers 28-yard line. The Browns reached the 1 before a questionable chop block penalty moved them back to the 16 and they settled for a 35-yard field goal by Szmyt.Delpit stepped in front of Love's third-down pass on the next possession, and his strong return set up the offense at the 4. After a pass interference penalty, Judkins powered in from the 1, and Szmyt made the extra point for a tie at 10 with 3:01 left.A 20-yard pass interference penalty and an 18-yard pass to tight end Tyler Kraft moved the Packers to the 18. The Browns forced a fumble by Jacobs and thought they had recovered, but replay review in New York couldn't see a clear recovery, so the ball stayed with the Packers.Brandon McManus lined up for a 43-yard field goal, and the veteran Harris pushed his way forward, stuck his long right arm in the air and sent the kick backward.The Browns, who were out of timeouts, took over at their 47 with 21 seconds left. Green Bay's Micah Parsons (two tackles, two quarterback hits) jumped offside for 5 yards, Flacco threw 3 yards to Jamari Thrash and then incomplete. On third-and-2 from the 45 with 12 seconds left, Flacco threw quickly over the middle to Njoku, who got to the 37 and got down. His teammates hurried to the line, got set and Flacco spiked the ball to kill the clock with two seconds left."That's right at the cusp," Stefanski said of having enough time. "It's been done right around there, but you have to be great. Joe knew it, Dave knew it, all the guys knew it. Typically you say 15 seconds. I just had a lot of confidence in that group to get it done."Szmyt did the rest."He knows who he is and one moment doesn't define you," Myles Garrett said. "He was just waiting for this opportunity to come again and we knew he was ready. He was excited to get the opportunity when the game was on the line again and he made the most of it and we couldn't be prouder of him."Stefanski said he never considered benching Flacco (21-for-36 for 142 yards, an interception and a 55.6 passer rating) for rookie Dillon Gabriel and said he's sticking with Flacco as the starter. There were plenty of people in the stands, on social media and in group texts calling for Gabriel with the way the offense played for the first three quarters. "Go, Pack, go" could be heard from the Cheeseheads in the crowd.The Browns had 118 yards and six first downs through 45 minutes. "There's a couple things in the world that are better, but from a football standpoint, the last-second win, the field goal to win the game, the emotions, the adrenaline is what you play the game for. You play the game to win and it just makes it special."Delpit turned 27 on Saturday. He was happy with his interception but wanted to talk about Szmyt."Can we talk about him?
