Liverpool Township residents to vote on police levies for general election

LIVERPOOL TWP. — In the general election, Liverpool Township residents will vote on two levies for police services. Trustee Sean Lackey said the township subcontracts with the Medina County Sheriff's Office to provide police services to the community on a part-time basis. Services include patrolling and assisting with traffic and crashes. One levy residents will vote on is a 1-mill renewal levy that would last five years and raise $79,800 per year. According to the auditor's office, upon passage, homeowners would pay approximately $5.50 per year per $100,000 of home value. The other levy is a 0.25-mill additional levy that would raise $88,100 per year and last five years. The auditor's office stated the owner of a $100,000 home would pay about $9 per year upon passage. Funds from both levies will go toward expenses like wages and new equipment for police, Lackey said. An additional levy is being put on the ballot because the township's population and costs have increased over time. "The reason why we didn't do one levy and cover any additional under one new levy is that if you don't renew the old levies, you lose a rollback reimbursement," he said. The election is on Nov. 4, and early in-person voting starts on Oct. 7. "We're very proud of our police and our fire department," Lackey said. "We have a full-time, 24/7 fire department now, and we did that without raising costs. This is just a nominal amount to make sure we continue to provide police protection and make sure that keeps our community safe."
