Brunswick Schools gives tour of construction projects in the district

BRUNSWICK — A group of current and former Brunswick Schools administration and board of education members saw the ongoing construction on campus firsthand during a tour on Wednesday. Superintendent Jason Niedermeyer said the keys to the new maintenance department are anticipated to be turned over on Oct. 27, and the project is on time and under budget. "We made some intentional decisions about layout and materials used, and that's a pre-engineered metal building as opposed to a masonry building," he said. "All those kinds of things led us to being under budget." The current expected date of completion for the new board of education office is spring 2026, Niedermeyer said. The board office is also on time and on budget. "We're kind of sitting back and going by department when it makes the most amount of sense to try to move our central office staff over to that building," he said. "We're not in a hurry to do that." The new Brunswick High School is still on target to open in August 2027, Niedermeyer said. When all the teachers are moved in, the goal is to demolish the east end of the current high school as quickly as possible because that will be the site for staff and student parking at the new school. "We anticipate having the keys turned over to us by July 1 of that summer," he said. "We'll have some time to move our staff in, become accustomed with that environment, give our teachers time to be able to get into their classrooms and get prepared." The classroom additions at Applewood and Kidder elementary schools have not gone out to bid yet, Niedermeyer said. Work is anticipated to start next spring with the additions ready for the start of the 2026-27 school year. "What the construction company has shared with me is that those are not huge jobs, and they should be able to complete that work in that time frame," he said. The construction projects are funded by a $102 million bond issue that passed in May 2023. "Our organization is really grateful for the continued support of our community," Niedermeyer said. "The part that impacts me the most is the conversations I get to have with people in the community," Niedermeyer said. "There's a genuine feeling of pride in our community that we're going to have a brand new school for our high school students.
